Description

An app to help you to learn how to harmonize a song like classical masters.

An app to help you to learn how to harmonize a song like classical masters. It accepts a song of up to 8 notes and generates one chord per note. The most common harmonizations are proposed in different categories : minimum voices movement, only descending or ascending bass, with modulations, with dissonances, with descending fifths.

A minimum background in music composition and harmony is required.

Each solution is proposed including its chords sequence, its traduction in terms of functional harmony, the bass line and the voicings (Soprano, Alto, Tenor, Bass). Harmonization rules are classical and mostly found in grand classical masters scores : all strict classical harmonization rules are applied including consecutive fifths or octaves, direct fifths or octaves, obligatory movements of leading tones and dissonances plus 7th preparation when required. No licence are authorized.

The only thing you need to do is to enter your song on the virtual keyboard, select key, the mode (minor or major) and the type of harmonization : question or answer or, if your have some harmonization expertise, a particular cadence such as Perfect Authentic Cadence (PAC), Imperfect Authentic Cadence (IAC), Half Cadence(HC), Imperfect Cadence (IC). Question is an harmonization ending with a dominant chord with a feeling of question, Answer is a harmonization ending with a perfect authentic cadence giving the feeling of a conclusion or answer.

Up to 8 notes are accepted. Be warned that figuring out solutions for 8 notes may take up to 40 seconds in older devices (vc. 5 seconds on iPad M1). It is advised to enter no more than 4 notes for immediate results in this case.

What’s New

Version 3

The algorithm has been modified to optimize significantly the harmonization speed. New "exotic" chords have been added. Only the best voicing of each functional chords sequence is proposed to avoid to show all the voicing versions of the same sequence and to show more alternate possible sequences. Bass pattern identification engine has been implemented to highlights bass descending/ascending by seconds, thirds, fourths or fifths (at least four consecutive similar movement). A section has been added sequences with "exotic" chords.
