Description

Word Zero is a crossword board game in the style of others you may have seen. Two players take turns placing tiles on a board to form words.
Tiles have different point values, and some board spaces have bonuses (like double-word score), and so on.

What makes this game different is the absence of ... annoyances.

- Zero interruptions: We have no ads during game play.

- Zero distractions: We don't have gems, rewards, stickers, or achievements.

- Zero deception: We do offer computer players (Bots), but they never pretend to be real people.

- Zero manipulation: We don't send you notifications nagging you to play a game.

- Zero cheats: We don't have in-game assistance or power-ups.

Instead, Word Zero has a simple model of requiring one "token" for each game you play.

- Each new user gets a batch of free game tokens to start. More free tokens are provided periodically and as resources allow.

- Users who want to play more often can purchase additional tokens through In-App Purchases.

- Game tokens do not expire and can be used at whatever pace you like.

Highlights:

- Sign In With Apple

- Games are "correspondence" style. Each player has up to 3 days for their turn, but it is considered good form to play as quickly as possible. If a player does not make a turn within that time period, a pass is automatically assumed and it becomes the other player's turn. If a player "auto-passes" twice in a row, and if their opponent makes a turn in between, the game is declared a forfeit and the opponent wins. Note that it is considered bad form to abandon a game.

- Languages currently supported for game play include English and Spanish

- For games in English, we use the NASPA Word List, which is the official word reference for SCRABBLE play in the United States and Canada.

- Push notifications to let you know when it is your turn

- Players who use this app are expected to play without outside assistance. Using dictionaries, word lists, or other helps during a game is considered cheating. All players are on the honor system.

- An Elo rating system is used to give an approximate indication of the strength of each player.

- Although the primary focus of Word Zero is to facilitate games between people, the ability to play against computer players ("Bots") is provided as well. The Bot-related features are intentionally kept separated from other areas of the app, so there can be no confusion about whether you are playing a Bot or a real person.

Great app!

Super fun app with a nice & simple way to play scrabble without any hooplah or annoying ads. It’s still new so it’s not perfect and has a few small issues.

For example, I’m not sure how many tokens we get a month. That could be explained a little better. Also if we win, it would be nice if that token would come back to us!

I also find it slightly annoying when I am playing on the far left side of the scrabble board. Every time I try to remove a letter from that far left line, I end up swiping out of the match on accident thanks to that motion being the ‘go back’ gesture on iPhones. I wish there was a wider border or something to prevent that from happening.

Apart from those small things, the app is great!! I spend a lot of time playing it and can’t wait for it to get more popular!

Developer Response ,

Thanks for your comments.

We've deliberately been a bit vague about free tokens. We're still figuring things out, and we don't want to make commitments and break them later. But I do understand how this causes confusion. Hopefully we can give a bit more clarity soon.

We've accumulated a list of annoyances, and the left side swipe gesture is one of the big ones. A fix is in progress.

Thanks again. Glad you like the app!

Still some challenges

I love the vision for this app but it's been challenging so far. Kind of hard to get an engaged opponent...I did finish a couple of games (including one with the admin--thanks Eric!) at first but since then it's been hard to get a game going. So I'm wasting tokens and it's just not a lot of fun.

I have been playing the "greedy" bot Irene and that has been good practice so I like that part.

When I tried to get support to ask a few questions, I couldn't get into the support site and for some reason my email address is not recognized so I couldn't log in. This was the only way I could find to communicate my concerns.

Developer Response ,

Thanks for taking the time to give some feedback here.

We are continually looking for ways to improve the ability for people to find opponents who "play responsibly" (prompt, finish to the end, etc).

Our current solution for the support site has not worked out well. It's a completely separate sign-in. We're going to revisit how to deal with that. But if you had additional feedback, we would be eager to hear it and process it.

Again, thanks for the feedback. We're constantly working to make the app better.
