Write or Die Eliminates Writer's Block.
The problem with writing is that the feedback loop is just too long. Unless you've got a deadline looming it's difficult to find the impetus to keep writing. Write or Die aims to address this difficulty and help you hack your writing process and get your words out!
It's a new kind of writing application that provides consequences for distraction and procrastination. As long as you keep writing, everything is fine, but if you become distracted, there are customizable consequences.
The original Write or Die mode, keeps you focused by providing consequences for procrastination and distraction. If you keep writing you're fine, but if you get distracted and stop typing, the app will encourage you to keep writing with a variety of unpleasant stimuli.
The mode with the warm fuzzies. The app creates a (customizable) calm writing environment as long as you keep writing. You are thereby encouraged to continue writing to maintain your chill.
This breaks your writing word goal into sections with milestones of pleasantness along the way to help keep you moving. Customizable pleasant sounds and images.

Newly reworked Universal App! Use on iPad or iPhone.
Write or Die puts the "prod" in productivity! Short-circuit your writer's block and keep yourself from procrastinating while writing your first draft.
New Modes! Stimulus Mode provides a peaceful writing experience with calming sounds and tranquil scenes (Headphones recommended). If you stop writing, you are returned to a silent, white page. Reward Mode punctuates your writing session with positive rewards when you complete a certain amount of words.

Great on laptop and iPad, not so much on iPhone
Okay, here's the thing... Write or Die has been my best friend for years. It's a great thing to have on my laptop and iPad, and works beautifully on both. However, I hardly ever use it on iPhone because (1) it doesn't let me listen to my music while writing (it will let the music play at first, but shuts it off the minute the app makes any sound of its own whatsoever), (2) there's no third-party keyboard support whatsoever (which makes it hard to get much of anything written on iPhone because my Bluetooth keyboard isn't compatible with it), and (3) auto-correct is not a thing, which makes it even more impossible to work with on iPhone. Please update. I have a chronic illness and sometimes can only use my phone to get things done, and this would be such a huge help.

I'm so glad there's a Write or Die app available for iOS again. I know there was one, but I guess it got pulled for a while, so I never got it. Well, I have the new one, and it works beautifully. I'm doing NaNoWriMo, and catching up quickly now that I've downloaded this app and been using it regularly. I used it on my laptop a lot, but since the laptop gave out on me, I've been using my iPad for writing, and really missed Write or Die (I had both the original and #2), so thank you so much for porting it. The lack of auto-capitalization and auto-correct threw me off briefly, but now I'm used to it and I have no other complaints. Everything seems to work perfectly. Definitely worth the $10 to download.
This is the only app I've ever paid more than a couple bucks for and I did it as much as a tribute to the intention of the app as I did to use it. Write or Die won't make you write because it can't actually kill you. Only you can make yourself write. Physically removing yourself from any electronic source of distraction is mandatory if you are prone to such distractions. What it will do is turn writing into a game which definitely helps build the writing muscle. Even seeing the icon for the app will reinforce your goal to write. As for the design of the app, it has a really cozy, homemade feel that is quirky and magical. It's a bit like a castle at night. Now go write ... or be disappointed in yourself. Peace & love.
So buggy and it ate an entire session!
I've used the original Write or Die desktop program for years. It was a part of my NaNo and daily writing setup and I loved it. I wanted a more portable writing setup for the coffee shop, so I switched to an iPad Mini with a Magic Keyboard and downloaded this app expecting the same no-frills, get-'er-done performance.
The first few sessions went without a hitch--I wrote 1000 words in 20 minutes, puppies popped up, and I would export it to Scrivener.
And then a couple of days ago, I was drafting a climatic scene for my novel. I was completely in the zone, and stopped at 1500 words. The completion puppies popped up, I clicked out to the lobby, and went to export it to Scrivener.
To my horror, it only saved 200 of the words and rewrote all the other sessions as those 200 words. I lost almost the entire scene and if I hadn't already exported the other sessions, they would have been lost, too.
It's really a shame that I can't rely on this app to properly perform a function as basic as saving my work, especially knowing the original version was so reliable.
With Family Sharing set up, up to six family members can use this app.
