Description

Deflection is the most interactive, fast, and precise app available for structural beam analysis. Design visually and obtain engineering results, graphs, and equations instantaneously!

Simply place loads and supports on the beam, and see how it bends. Find a cross section in the built-in library, or define a custom shape. Deflection, internal stresses, and other useful results are automatically updated.

This software is the result of over six years of continuous development and innovation aimed at mechanical engineering, civil engineering, and structural engineering. This tool will help you apply beam elastic theory from day 1 as you are learning Mechanics of Materials, and it will be your go-to pocket reference any time in the future.

RESULTS

Obtain design results and diagrams in real-time.

• Shear force
• Bending moment

What’s New

Version 5.13.0

• USER REQUESTED: Configure the number of significant figures used to display values. This does not affect inputs or internal calculations.
• USER REQUESTED: Configure whether large values should be displayed using scientific or engineering notation.
• USER REQUESTED: Different engineers have different needs, so you can now configure the direction of moment diagrams to match your convention and industry.
• NEW: Add a title to your design document using the new text box on top of the design area.
• IMPROVED: Bending stress visualizations have been revamped to display both max tension and compression components intuitively.
• IMPROVED: Diagram labels are a little smarter and have a better layout. When selecting a discontinuous point, both sides of it will now be labeled.
• IMPROVED: Interaction with distributed loads should feel better now, and the app won't crash if you enter an absurdly large length for it.
• FIXED: Minor fixes in vertical cross section diagrams.
• CHANGED: Use the settings button in the home screen to modify app default settings. These settings will apply to any new designs as well as the cross section and material libraries. Configuring options (units, significant figures, notation, etc.) within a design will now only apply to that design document.

Exceptional app!!

This is a really great app for shear and moment diagrams. Very intuitive, fabulous interface! Tried using a similar applications on the web and this beats it hands down, glad I spent the money. I'd do it again in a heartbeat. One recommendation would be to have moment in in-lb not just ft-lbs. Again great app, a winner!!!

Needs polishing

Kinda klunky interface. The calculator layout is poor. Calculator needs means of entering scientific notation. Missing aluminum extrusions. Should have a way to favorite beam shapes and add user defined ones. I prefer scientific notation normalized to be x.xx x10^x not xxx.x x10^x

Not sure why 10x length limitation.

Developer Response ,

Thank you very much for your detailed feedback and requests! We always have to make a tradeoff between polishing existing features and rolling out new ones, but over time we try to address all sharp corners, so thanks for pointing some of them out!

Regarding the 10X requirement: The equations that the app uses internally assume that the beam is "slender", meaning that the length-to-height ratio should be greater than 10. If you need to design for something shorter, you may need to use a different type of analysis tool. You can find a mention of this in the general Wikipedia article on Beam Deflection https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deflection_(engineering)
