Introduce Solids With Confidence

A trustworthy guide to feeding your baby.

Solid Starts takes the stress out of introducing solid foods to your baby. Learn how to best cut and serve each food based on age and ability, keep a record, learn about allergens, and more.

What we love: The app’s “How to Serve” profiles offer guidance on over 400 first foods, with visual charts showing the safest ways to serve fruits, vegetables, and more at each age. For instance, apples should be cooked and halved for babies at 6 months, but can be sliced thinly and eaten raw by 9 months. Comprehensive articles also cover key topics like distinguishing choking from gagging and whether babies should have salt.

Step-by-step meal plans developed by pediatric feeding experts help your baby explore 100 first foods.

Quick tip: Find simple, age-appropriate recipes on the Meals tab. Start easy with hummus and cucumber dippers, then expand to meals for the whole family such as big batch bolognese sauce or butter chicken curry. Each recipe comes with optional modifications and substitutions to accommodate every palate.

Meet the creator: Founder and CEO Jenny Best created Solid Starts in 2019 out of necessity—she was looking for reliable guidance for starting her twins on solid foods. Today, her team of pediatricians, a dietitian, a pediatric allergist, and other experts rigorously test each food in the app’s database alongside families. “We take extreme care with every food we publish,” Best says. “Our biggest challenge is simply publishing new foods fast enough!”
