Turn-Based Puzzle Game

In Geostorm, based on the forthcoming Gerard Butler blockbuster of the same name, a series of natural disasters threatens humanity after the planet’s weather satellites go rogue. While the movie promises plenty of big explosions and memorable one-liners, the game slows down the pace just a little for an experience inspired by Square Enix’s Go franchise.

It’s a puzzler, and a really good one, which might come as a surprise to cynics burned by too many subpar Hollywood-licensed titles. Developer Sticky Games has a history of bucking that trend, though—it also created the Warner Bros.–published Suicide Squad: Special Ops, a first-person shooter that had no right being as fun as it was.

“We don’t treat intellectual property as a skin tugged on top of a standard game framework, but really get to the core essence of what the property is all about,” explains product manager Eric Diepeveen.

The events in the game parallel those in the feature film, but you won’t take control of Butler’s chiseled physique in the portable iteration. Instead, you’ll play as three separate would-be survivors—Denis, Laurence, and Tom—as they struggle to keep ahead of quakes, fire, crumbling buildings, and floods, among other dangers.

“Each chapter in the game takes place in a different location with different hazards to overcome,” adds Eric.

Swipe characters through beautiful environments spilling with detail as the action unfolds in turn-based maneuvers. Water shimmers. Electrical wires pop and buzz. Chunks of concrete fall all around you. It’s clear that a lot of love went into the presentation. Thankfully, just as much work has gone into the puzzles, which are always clever and challenging. To progress across the five-plus-hour campaign, you’ll need to use axes to break windows and desks as makeshift platforms.

“Our goal was to create a stand-alone experience that would rival the puzzle genre’s best games,” says Eric. “You don’t have to see the movie before you play the game—it’s really accessible that way.”
