LookUp bills itself as “an elegant dictionary,” and it certainly has plenty of visual appeal.

In the Word of the Day feed that appears when you open the app, each of the often esoteric words is accompanied by a colorful illustration. But in addition to being pretty, the drawings are also a surprisingly effective way to help you remember all of those definitions.

Malleate (to beat into shape with a hammer), for example, appears in a bold font and is paired with a drawing of a hammer. Pronk (to jump with all four limbs at once) is shown with four-legged mammals leaping. And smaragdine (having the color of emeralds) places the word, along with the gem, on a dark green background.

Learn useful (and not so useful) words.

You can save specific words to your favorites list to review them later. And, like any good dictionary, LookUp lets you search for specific entries—even commonplace ones—offering up the definition, the etymology, the beginning of a Wikipedia entry if available, and a tap-to-play pronunciation guide.

So challenge yourself to learn a new word a day. Start with tarantism (an extreme urge to dance), perhaps. Drop it in conversation and see how many raised eyebrows you get.
