Choosing a hero to battle in Arena of Valor’s team-based combat is somewhat of a big commitment. Every hero takes time to learn, and it’s no fun spending hours getting to know one only to realize the two of you aren’t compatible. So where to start? Try these five characters, who are formidable in very different ways.

Chaugnar

Chaugnar prevents your team from getting slowed down.

This bipedal battle elephant may seem underwhelming at first. His basic attacks don’t do much damage, and he’s not very effective against single enemies. The upside? He can unleash a blast that nullifies any slowing effects on nearby teammates, then trigger magic explosions to obliterate enemy health bars while your squad fights unhindered. How are people not picking Chaugnar every game?

Zephys

Good luck trying to escape from Zephys.

Covered in spiny armor, Zephys is just as deadly as he looks. He appears in a blink, slams the ground and stuns packs of foes, then slashes his weapons in a blinding flurry to slice away enemy health bars while replenishing his own. In case that wasn’t terrifying enough, he’ll easily chase down any wounded opponents to the edges of the map. Whether in one-on-one combat or the frenzy of team fights, Zephys is a menace.

Ormarr

Ormarr will smash and stun your enemies into submission.

This imposing warrior is the best kind of annoying. He’s built to stun, slow, and throttle your enemies into defeat. When armed with the right items, this guy will mess up your attack speed, skill use, and escape attempts. He is a constant interrupter who can actually deal significant damage when he catches groups of enemies. If he starts spinning like a tornado, get as far away as you can.

Peura

Peura’s restoration magic lets your team keep fighting.

We all love a healer, and that’s primarily what Peura is. She can’t withstand much damage, but she can blast out a regenerative aura to keep everyone’s health bars topped up, allowing you to recover quickly during and after fights. She won’t score the most kills, but her heals and stuns can tilt the balance of any battle.

Raz

Raz can launch fire from afar, then deliver knockout punches.

A guy who throws fireballs while punching? Correct. Raz takes a bit more skill to master than most, but he can be devastating once you learn how to position him. He can lunge into the middle of fights and pop enemies with a stunning uppercut, then follow up with a barrage of fire magic and knuckle bashes. In the right hands, his pugilistic pyrotechnics will force foes to flee in terror.
