Games are an inherently cinematic form, but every now and then we stumble upon one that resonates in an almost primordial way with a film we’ve seen. The connection isn’t necessarily literal—it’s more experiential. Take the the titles below, for example. All share an uncanny resemblance to some of this year’s nominated films.

The Nominee: The Post
The Game: The Westport Independent

As The Post masterfully illustrates, you’ll find as much drama behind the news as in it. In The Westport Independent, you’re tasked with managing a team of journalists, choosing which stories to publish and what to ignore. As you might have guessed, decisions have far-reaching consequences.

The Nominee: Lady Bird
The Game: Oxenfree

Like the dark, funny coming-of-age story Lady Bird, Oxenfree features a stellar cast of characters. Among them: the smart and snarky protagonist, Alex, who navigates the ups and downs of adolescence with humor. As in the film, the game’s emotional resonance comes from the insightful dialogue of its colorful cast of teens.

The Nominee: Blade Runner 2049
The Game: Transistor

Blade Runner 2049’s neon-splashed Los Angeles is as much a character in the film as K or Rick Deckard. Transistor’s own city, Cloudbank, succeeds similarly—it’s a gorgeous, richly detailed dystopia you need to be immersed in to believe.

The Nominee: Baby Driver
The Game: Need for Speed: No Limits

Baby Driver, a sonically charged heist movie, works beautifully for many reasons, but the synergy between music and action is where the film truly revs its engine. Likewise, if you’re looking to break a few traffic laws, outrun hot rods, and blast tunes while doing so, give Need for Speed: No Limits a spin.

The Nominee: Dunkirk
The Game: War Wings

Among the many horrors of war that Dunkirk depicts, the scenes where war planes attempt to shoot one another out of the sky are among the most intense. The flight-combat game War Wings delivers something similar. Here, you control 70-plus historically accurate aircraft, including the RAF Spitfire seen in the film.
