GAME
OF THE
DAY
World of Goo
There is goo and then there is gravity. The two usually don’t get along. In the wonderful physics puzzler World of Goo—one of our favorites of all time—your job is to connect sludgy balls into makeshift structures so they ooze toward the nearest exit pipe. It’s an innovative premise that had the game dripping with accolades when it debuted in 2010. Remarkably, it remains just as immersive and rewarding today.
As you advance through the game’s 48 impressive stages, tap to join globs of the gunky little guys to build bridges, zeppelins, cannonballs, leaning towers, bouncing contraptions, floating gizmos, and even giant tongues. Not, however, without issue. Your beautiful mechanisms will often sway, falter, and crumble under gravity’s embrace.
The trick is utilizing both physics and goo properties to your advantage. This requires knowing just how much weight your jiggling spire can shoulder without toppling. It also requires understanding your gelatinous friends. White goo features additional appendages for building. Green goo detaches and reattaches to its gunky brethren. Balloon goo floats. Bomb goo explodes. There’s a deep strategy to all this.
World of Goo’s polished 2D visuals come alive with realistic physics backed by a rock-solid fluidity. The gooey balls stretch, bounce, and jiggle around with hilarious style.
If you’re in the market for a brilliant puzzle game, here’s a great choice. Much like the squishy cast of characters, you’ll be happy to stick around.
