Sure, YouTube is incredibly easy to use. But that doesn’t mean you can’t level up your video viewing with these quick tips.

1. Slow your roll

Want to scrutinize each moment of a tutorial or #EpicFail video? Switch to slo-mo. Tap a video as it’s playing, then tap the three-dot icon that appears and select “Playback speed.” Here you can choose quarter, half, or three-quarter speed. Or if you’re in a rush, crank it up to a brisk but still intelligible 1.5x.

2. Skip back (or forward) with ease

Here’s the easiest way to rewind and fast-forward: While watching a video, double-tap the left or right half of the play window. The skip time defaults to 15 seconds; to customize this, tap your account icon on the upper right, then tap Settings > General > “Skip forward and back.” Pick anywhere from five to 60 seconds.

3. Nix the ads

With a YouTube Premium subscription, stream ad-free, download videos for offline viewing, and watch with picture-in-picture mode. To sign up, tap your account icon on the upper right, then tap Settings > Get YouTube Premium.

4. Take a break

Want the app to let you know when you’ve been watching for a while? Tap your account icon on the upper right, go to Settings > General, then tap “Remind me to take a break.” To see how much time you’ve spent watching over the past week, tap your account icon and select “Time watched.”

5. Make a clip

With YouTube Clips, you can share your favorite 5 to 60 seconds from any video. To select the segment and create a shareable link, log in to YouTube and tap the Clip icon beneath the video. (You’ll need to set up a YouTube channel to use this feature.)
