1Password Power Tips

Make passwords more secure—and more convenient.

1Password 7 - Password Manager

Generate & keep passwords safe

The popular password manager 1Password is more than a locker for your logins. Here are three features that can help you keep your digital identities secure.

The magic shortcut

While you could manually copy and paste logins from the app as needed, you’ll turbocharge them by memorizing 1Password’s keyboard shortcut: ⌘ + \. Press those two keys at any login screen, and 1Password will fill and submit your credentials automatically—no additional typing required.

Get down with TOTP

In addition to requiring a username and password, some sites now ask you to use a special authenticator app that creates a temporary password known as a TOTP (or time-based onetime password, in case you were wondering). 1Password can generate these for a range of popular services, and the handy keyboard shortcut above will enter the code so you can log in fast.

Always on the lookout

1Password doesn’t take a passive approach to security: It has an active security force of its own. Called Watchtower, this service analyzes your stored logins, flagging passwords that might have been compromised or that you’ve reused on multiple websites (a big security no-no). Rather than having to track the latest on hacks and breaches yourself, let Watchtower run checks for you in the background.

In the latest version of 1Password on Mac, Watchtower appears as a top-level filter in the sidebar, making it easy to see which logins and passwords require your attention.
