Dive into the dreams of Rovio’s furious fowl in Angry Birds Dream Blast. Unsurprisingly, their sleepy visions involve lots of cheerful destruction—and colorful puzzles.
Unlike the bird-flinging fun of other Angry Birds games, Dream Blast plays a bit like a match-3. A bunch of small bubbles randomly fill a board that looks like a pachinko machine without the pegs. Tap like-colored batches of three or more and they’ll disappear, sending the remaining bubbles tumbling into the open spaces left behind.
There’s a surprising amount of depth and complexity at play. Multi-tiered levels drop bubbles from one vertical stage to another as you burst through barriers. And your goals change frequently: In one level, you have to safely guide large eggs to the bottom, while in another you need to take out a set number of bubbles of the same color. The strategy stays fresh.
Of course, this wouldn’t be Angry Birds without some enraged avians. Match four or more orbs and a scowling Red shows up. Tap him and he’ll explode, clearing a big chunk of the board and dispatching any nearby pigs.
Better yet, merge birds to create bigger bombs. Combine two Reds to make a Chuck (he’s the yellow fellow), and two Chucks to create a potent Bomb bird. Fill up the screen with enough characters, and one detonation will set off a glorious chain reaction of colorful carnage. Those pesky pigs don’t stand a chance.
With satisfying physics and perfectly balanced difficulty, Dream Blast is a fresh take on Angry Birds that still feels right at home. Your feathered friends might still be grumpy, but a few levels in and you’ll be all smiles.
