Originally released over the course of two years, all five episodes of the brilliantly sneaky stealth adventure République are now available. And binging on it is a fine plan: This tense game is best enjoyed from curious start to glorious finish.
Conceived specifically for playing on a touchscreen by developer Camouflaj, République tells the story of Hope, a young woman trying to escape a facility run by an insidious organization that performs dubious experiments on human test subjects.
Hope reaches you by phone while trapped inside the facility—it’s your task to help her escape by hacking into its network and guiding her past danger. Monitor the security feeds to watch guard patrols, swapping among cameras to scan the surrounding area for threats—or opportunities. Read emails and listen to audio files to delve deeper into the mysteries of République’s dystopian world. And if Hope gets spotted, try to protect her by remotely locking doors or telling her to move to temporary hiding spaces.
The drama simmers for several episodes, eventually revealing a terrifying new enemy. The daring finale answers most of the big questions while leaving plenty for you to ponder. République stays with you long after the credits roll.
Even when it’s over, you’re not finished. Play through again to get bonus outfits or listen to the making-of developer commentary track, which offers a glimpse into the game’s creation. At once a portrait of a totalitarian dystopia and a stealth-driven adventure, République charts its own dangerous course. Can you hack it?
