Learning to play a favorite song on guitar? Let Capo analyze an audio track and figure out the chords for you.

Simply drag an unprotected music file into Capo’s window to see the chords below a waveform of the audio. Specify your instrument (guitar, bass, mandolin, ukulele, or banjo) and any alternate tuning you’re using, and Capo will display the tablature.

If you’ve got a Mac with the Apple M1 chip, Capo does everything faster: Processor-intensive song analysis, transposition, and other functions are incredibly quick on the M1. These performance enhancements open the door for features that would have previously only been feasible on a Mac Pro, according to developer Chris Liscio.

Here’s a sample of what Capo can do:

Slow it down

Having trouble keeping up with a track as you play along? Press the Down Arrow to slow the song without affecting pitch. This feature is also great for learning a song by ear.

Label sections of a track to make a note for yourself. It won’t be long before you change “Needs Practice!” to “Totally Got This!”

Change the key

Need to play in a different key? Press Command-Up Arrow (or Down Arrow) to transpose the entire track in real time. Capo updates the chords automatically.

Do a quick key change using the Key controls. Capo can display piano fingerings as well as tablature for new chords.

Run it back

If you’re struggling with a tricky part of a song, try creating a loop: Change to the Regions control (press Control-1), then click the Place Region button to create a section that plays over and over. You can make as many regions as you need, then jump among them using the Previous Region and Next Region buttons.

Isolate it

Having trouble hearing a particular instrument in the mix? Switch to the Playback control (press Control-4), then click the Isolation button (which looks like a little trident). Here you can isolate a particular frequency range on the track and use the Pan and Width sliders to focus on, say, a song’s bass guitar or mandolin solo.

Drag a few sliders to isolate certain frequencies of a track.

Practice, practice, practice

Skipping a track’s long intro each time you run through it is a cinch with Capo: Use the Markers control (press Control-2) to set custom start and end points. Or create markers at places on the track you want to jump to; use Option-Left Arrow and Option-Right Arrow to skip among them.
