Life can change in an instant. One moment you’re living in a small, rustic village; the next, you’ve been transported 800 years into the future, when flying cities soar above the now-ravaged planet. Talk about cultural whiplash!
That’s what happened to Aldo, at least. After getting his bearings, the star of Another Eden sets out to unlock the mystery of his trip through time and stave off a world-ending catastrophe. In this rich, colorful role-playing game, it’s all in a day’s work.
Penned by Japanese gaming legend Masato Kato (Chrono Trigger, Xenogears, Final Fantasy XI), Another Eden features visuals and soundtracks that recall past greats. And with quick combat and compelling characters, it plays like a classic too.
Your team of six heroes fights blade-to-claw against monsters and robots. If one of your warriors starts running low on health or magic, you can tag in a backup and let your wounded party member recover.
These tactical switch-ups are vital to survival, especially when you go from fighting low-level goblins to mammoth mechas. Match swords and axes against dragons, stone golems, elemental spirits, synthetic humanoid assassins, and much more. There’s real skill in having the right team for the right fight—and fortunately Another Eden is packed with quirky, unique warriors to recruit, from knights and wizards to pirates and archers.
Another Eden squeezes a lot into its main story, but you’re also handsomely rewarded for tackling side quests and extra dungeons. All that effort pays off: With enough experience, party members may eventually change classes, making them that much stronger.
Fans of old-school RPGs will fall hard for Another Eden, but this game is worth a try even if you’re new to the genre. Once you start roaming through the past, present, and future with your customized collection of heroes, you’ll want to see this time-traveling tale through to the very end.
