Where text starts

For most people, notes go in a notes app, to-do lists in a task manager, formatted text in a word processor. But what about drafts of social media posts? A note that ends up turning into a blog post? Long plain-text documents? It’s enough to give you writer’s block!

Here’s a suggestion: Start everything in Drafts and skip the decision entirely. This nimble app serves as a notebook, editor, text organizer, and more, with a slew of features for organizing, finding, and sharing text that make it more than just another notes app.

Use Workspaces to create saved views based on keyword searches, tags, and more. This view shows only documents that contain specific text tagged “Work.”

Quickly jot down ideas in plain text or Markdown format and flesh them out later. Save text from the web or an email for future reference. Store your boilerplate email replies. As you write, Drafts automatically saves versions of your documents so you can go back and review your edits.

Drafts’ Actions feature makes quick work of tasks like converting from Markdown to HTML, changing text case, saving a document to the cloud, and much more. You can even combine actions: Convert a story to HTML, tag it with the publication’s name, and save it to a shared Dropbox folder—all with a single click.

Actions give you one-click access to common tasks.

Whether you use Drafts as your sole text editor or more of a staging area, it’s easy to keep everything organized. Flag your most important documents or search text by keyword. Use filters to quickly view all documents with a given tag. Or use the Workspaces feature to create saved views based on keyword searches, tags, and other criteria.

Drafts also reduces the friction of getting started writing. Press a keyboard shortcut to bring up Drafts’ Quick Capture window and start typing away, no matter which app you’re working in. Use the system-wide menu to quickly search your documents, or create a new one with the contents of the clipboard.

The system-wide Quick Capture window provides instant access to all your Drafts documents.

Since you’ll be spending a lot of time in the app, you’ll appreciate that you can make it comfortable to use: Pick your preferred font, line spacing, and other text settings—with different sets of settings for different types of documents (plain text, Markdown, JavaScript, and more). And choose your favorite theme (available with a Drafts Pro subscription) to set the perfect color scheme, with different settings based on whether your Mac is in Dark Mode.

Another thing you don’t have to worry about: which device to use. Drafts syncs all your documents and actions to iCloud, allowing you to seamlessly work across iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch versions of the apps. You can even dictate to your Apple Watch; the transcribed text is added to the app’s Inbox on all your devices.
