Star Traders: Frontiers

The sci-fi captain RPG

View

It’s just you, a spaceship, and a galaxy full of possibilities. Where will you go? And more important, who will you be?

These are the questions posed by Star Traders: Frontiers, a sci-fi epic that mixes role-playing, simulation, and white-knuckle tactical combat. Whether you’re deftly navigating intergalactic diplomacy or just scouring the space lanes for cargo ships to raid, it’s a galaxy of fun.

Board a ship and you’ll duke it out with the enemy crew in turn-based combat.

As with all great adventures, you’ll start small. Customize your captain’s appearance—maybe you’ll be a space pirate, or an explorer who digs up valuable minerals on distant worlds. The game’s deep story line spans decades.

But feel free to ignore the plot entirely and explore on your own, trading goods in procedurally generated star systems and taking on missions for well-heeled contacts. Either way, you’ll gain new abilities and earn cash to upgrade your ship.

After earning some cash, upgrade from a modest starter ship to this beastly Guardian Interceptor.

There are seemingly endless ways to play. Specialize in diplomacy to help space royalty forge political alliances. Or perhaps you’ll hunt down outlaws, engaging in tense, turn-based ship battles. Want to create a boarding party with matching mohawks, trained in melee combat? You’re the captain now—you call the shots.

As dense as a neutron star, Star Traders: Frontiers is also beautifully intuitive. Screens are packed with information yet easy to navigate. Robust tutorials teach you the ropes; a built-in wiki lets you dive even deeper into systems and lore.

Activities like patrolling and blockading are resolved by a nifty mini-game. One card is randomly picked—will it be risky or rewarding?

There’s a lot to take in—and even more to get out of it. Enormous and engaging, Star Traders: Frontiers is a must-play for space exploration fans. Suit up, engage thrusters, and head into the great unknown.
