The demons, mages, and assassins of Dota Underlords are far-out, fantastical heroes. But they have one thing in common with us mortal schlubs: They gotta manage their money right!

Among the many strategic elements you’ll juggle in this red-hot auto-chess game is how to maximize gold. From buying heroes to boosting the number of pieces you can have in play, those lustrous little coins impact the outcome in major ways.

Follow these (golden) nuggets of wisdom to make your Dota Underlords economy flourish—and your opponents tremble.

Get on a streak—and stay there—to rack up the cash.

Always be interesting

For every 10 gold in your stash, you’ll pocket an extra coin at the start of the next round. That interest really adds up, maxing out at five extra gold when you have 50 or more in the bank, so keep an eye on that bottom line! Try to keep your gold reserve at a multiple of 10—or slightly higher—after the shop phase of each round.

It pays to win—and lose

Winning streaks of three or more rounds boosts your income (up to four extra gold for an eight-round streak). But defeat has perks too. If you lose three in a row, you’ll get one extra gold per round. Lose five or more battles and you’ll get two!

It’s always better to win, of course, but deliberately throwing fights to build up your bank account is a viable strategy in the early going. The worst strategy? Alternating between wins and losses. Get on a streak and stick with it!

Try to keep your bench clear! Do you really need those Witch Doctors?

Sell your benchwarmers

All those heroes you’re unlikely to level up are just cash sitting on the bench. Get rid of that silly Warlock. Accept that you’re never going to roll two more Venomancers. If your gold reserves are just shy of a multiple of 10 at the start of a round, sell back a hero you don’t need to bump up your stash.

Shop while they drop

Since you have no control over your units once the battle starts, it’s smart to shop while the round plays out. Interest gets calculated just before fighting commences, so any money you spend while the battle is underway won’t affect your earnings for the next round.

Our advice if your gold reserves hit 98: Start spending!

Save early, spend late

It’s tempting to race out of the gate, but be frugal in the early matches. Getting the interest flowing is more important than topping the leaderboard for a few fleeting rounds.

Then, late in the game when you’re facing elimination, make it rain! Buy XP to get more pieces on the board, and reroll frequently to get powerful synergies or three-star heroes in play. You can’t take it with you. Might as well go out in a blaze of golden glory!
