For Shawn and Christina Shaw, the popular farming-simulation game Hay Day is more than just a way to unwind—it’s a key part of their love story.

In 2013, Christina was getting over a breakup when a colleague suggested she meet her brother-in-law, Shawn. “I was like, ‘Oh no, come on. I just broke up,’” Christina says. “But she didn’t take no for an answer.”

For Shawn and Christina Shaw, Hay Day was fertile ground for true love.

Neither did Shawn. He friended Christina on Facebook. Sparks flew. Six months later the two moved in together.

“Once he became part of my life, he started playing Hay Day with me,” Christina says. Supercell’s farm simulation—in which players tend crops, trade goods, and grow a burgeoning agricultural business—had long been one of Christina’s go-to games. “I love animals—and it's kinda like doing chores while relaxing on the couch.”

A year later, Shawn decide to pop the question—and what better way than on the very farm they were tending together?

Shawn’s unforgettable proposal—complete with a virtual engagement ring.

Shawn spent weeks crafting the perfect proposal by email with Hay Day creator Supercell. The developer recommended a visit from the in-game mailman, who periodically drops off special deliveries to thank players for their patience during major updates or technical difficulties.

“I had my legs across his lap, I open up Hay Day, and I go, ‘Oh, the server went down. The mailman’s coming,’” Christina recalls.

But this was no ordinary letter.

“I froze when I saw what it was,” she says. “I couldn’t remember how to take a screenshot—I was trying to find my phone to take a picture of the iPad, and I didn’t even answer him.”

“I think it felt like 10 minutes for him. It was probably 10 seconds,” says Christina. “He was like, ‘Are you going to answer me?’”

She did, of course. They married the following June.

“I love telling people how he did it,” Shaw says of the proposal. “It shows that he really gets me.”
