If you’ve ever wanted to dive into the spectacular ocean scenes in the BBC’s Blue Planet nature series, here’s your chance.

Inspired by the mystery of the deep and the real-world scientists who study it, Beyond Blue is a new Apple Arcade game featuring never-before-seen footage from BBC Studios.

In this open-world adventure, you’ll slip on the wet suit of a marine researcher named Mirai as she swims with a myriad of ocean life—playful dolphins, skittish cephalopods—all rendered with breathtaking beauty and accuracy.

After each mission, you’ll return to your submarine, where you can delve deeper into Mirai’s backstory.

While creating the game, developer E-Line Ventures consulted a team of biologists—all of whom play a key role in this near-future underwater narrative.

“As you explore, you’re supported by two scientists on the radio,” says E-Line CEO Michael Angst. “The personalities of these characters—and the challenges they face—are a composite of the scientists we interviewed.”

The humpback whales and other animals depicted in the game were modeled using the upper end of the species’ size and weight ranges.

You first meet Mirai on the trail of a pod of sperm whales as she scans the deep for their signature clicking sounds. Each time you complete a mission using your expedition’s cutting-edge research technology, you’ll unlock one of the game’s 17 “Ocean Insights” videos.

These mini-documentaries blend original Blue Planet footage and interviews with the scientists who helped create the game. All the while, you’ll learn more about Mirai’s personal journey as a marine biologist.

It’s that combination of heartfelt storytelling, engaging adventure, and beautiful visuals that gives Beyond Blue its incredible depth.
