An epic fantasy universe, a finely tuned strategy game, and an esports juggernaut, League of Legends pretty much put the multiplayer online battle arena genre (MOBA) on the map when it launched for Mac and PC over a decade ago.

With the mobile-only League of Legends: Wild Rift, it’s expanded the map even further.

Reworked and retrofitted for gaming on the go, Wild Rift brings the twitchy thrills, unmatched depth, and nail-biting tactics of the original to iPhone and iPad. It’s also the most accessible version of the game yet.

Squad up, storm the arena, and watch the sparks fly.

“League of Legends has always been best with friends, but it can be hard to get your friends into it,” says Michael Chow, executive producer at developer Riot Games. “They might lose themselves on the screen or get confused about which buttons to press. But with Wild Rift, even new players can get it in 10 minutes. That’s never been possible with League of Legends before now.”

Your goal: to destroy the opposing team’s Nexus, with each match a fast-paced 5v5 tug-of-war. Pick from dozens of colorful champions and head into the fray.

As champions level up and and access increasingly powerful abilities and equipment, battles quickly evolve into a tense, strategic dance. Should you focus on the opposing team’s heroes? Demolish defensive turrets? Cast spells to heal your allies? Hunt monsters in the jungle to gain power?

Fire one of Ashe’s arrows across the screen and watch it fly using a picture-in-picture camera.

Wild Rift’s handy tutorial missions ease you into the action and help you find the role that best suits you. For newcomers, Chow recommends a support character like Lux, Janna, Sona, or Seraphine.

“Support is more about healing, shielding, and setting up really cool strategic situations,” he says. “With these characters, it’s harder to do something wrong than with the more aggressive archetypes.”

And the game works like a charm on touchscreens. Auto-targeting makes hitting tough-to-reach targets easier (though vets can opt to aim manually). Multiple camera settings—including an awesome picture-in-picture option that tracks projectiles as they fly across the map—open up the battlefield. And because Wild Rift matches have fewer turrets than their Mac and PC counterparts, they usually wrap in about 15 minutes.

Take out neutral monsters like the Blue Sentinel to gain crucial buffs.

Longtime League players will enjoy perks that reward experience: Friends lists transfer right over, plus vets receive a bevy of resources—and the agency to decide how to invest them.

For newbies? Chow recommends sticking with one champion.

“Find a champion that you resonate with, either narratively or mechanically,” he suggests. “The more you switch, the more you’ll get confused. Picking a main and really bonding with it is one of the magical things about League of Legends.”
