Wakeout! isn’t a traditional workout app. It won’t help you run a half-marathon or blast your abs.
Wakeout!’s purpose—and the reason it was named our 2020 App of the Year—is to encourage bursts of fun, smile-inducing movement in your day. “Wakeouts aren’t designed to get you in shape. They’re to make you feel great,” says cofounder Pedro Wunderlich. “It’s like a physical cup of coffee.”
Wunderlich bills himself “chief exercise designer,” with good reason: He personally created each of the app’s nearly 1,500 exercises. We spoke to Wunderlich from his Guatemala home about the secret of Wakeout!’s effectiveness—and the possibility of a Wakeout! cameo by his pug, Taquito.
What’s your creative process like? How do you go about designing a new workout video?
It’s a ton of fun—I’ll set up the GoPro and just start trying out movements. I have a few parameters: Wakeouts have to be fun, they have to be safe, and ultimately they have to make you smile. That’s the secret sauce: We make you smile, and that gives you energy.
Where did you get the idea for the app?
After the success of our first app, I told my partner [Andres Canella], “Man, we should create a workout program you can do in bed.” The idea was very simple: When the alarm goes off, we’ll give you a short routine. I took my iPhone and recorded myself doing anything I could think of: throwing the pillow, rolling around. The early version of Wakeout! was a surprising success, but what was more surprising was that our customers started emailing to say “I switched to doing these on the couch” or “I do these at work.” That’s when the light bulb went off, and we started recording anything we could think of.
If you could go back in time, what advice would you give yourself?
Launch as soon as possible. In our experience, it’s possible to launch a minimum set of features and get plenty of answers from it. Just add a big red button that says, “Send us some feedback.” In a big way, Wakeout! itself was an idea from our customers.
Where do you plan to take Wakeout! from here?
We’re developing workouts for gamers that they can do in gaming chairs or with their controllers. We’re launching Wakeouts for musicians, college students, couples, and families. And we’re getting together with all kinds of dance instructors.
Do you ever get requests for specific exercises from Wakeout! fans?
Yes, and I seriously consider all the requests. Last week, someone asked, “Can you get my dog moving?” I was like, “OK, we’ll think about it!” I have a pug—his name is Taquito—so I grabbed him to see if any movements were good for him, but he didn’t seem too convinced!
