Many design ideas start out as a physical drawing—on a notepad, a napkin, or a whiteboard. Linearity Curve’s new Auto Trace Sketch mode transforms photos of those sketches into fully editable black-and-white vector graphics.

To get started, click Import on the app’s Home Screen. Open your sketch photo by dragging it into the window or by clicking Photo and choosing from your Photos library.

Next, select the entire image (press Command-A) to reveal the Auto Trace options to the right. Make sure the mode is set to Sketch, then click Auto Trace—in a flash, Linearity Curve works its magic.

Turn a hand-drawn sketch (left) into a fully editable image.

The default settings give you reliable results, but you can shake things up with a few targeted tweaks:

Embrace complexity

The Complexity slider lets you choose the fidelity of Linearity Curve’s conversion: Lower complexity smoothes outlines, giving you a more abstract result; higher values retain more details in intricate images. To experiment, undo your original trace (press Command-Z), adjust the Complexity slider, and apply Auto Trace again.

Adjust contrast

The Contrast slider sets the threshold for which shade becomes black and which becomes white. Redoing your trace with different Contrast settings can dramatically affect the mood of the resulting vector image, from clean and bright to something more shadowy or atmospheric.

Sketch mode can have a dramatic effect on the right color photo.

Experiment with color

Though Sketch mode is designed for line art, you can use the feature on color images for a striking result that resembles a screen print. Pictures with clear lines and contrast work best; experiment with the Complexity and Contrast settings to get just the right effect.
