Smartify is a smarter way to take a museum audio tour—or to learn about magnificent art from the comfort of your home.
With the help of the camera on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, the app recognizes more than 2 million works from 100-plus art institutions around the world. Just scan the work to listen to audio commentary or read a description detailing the piece’s history and inspiration.
Cool hack: This feature also works with photos of famous artwork. Try scanning a thumbnail of The Starry Night in your web browser, for instance.
An in-app purchase gives you access to curated tours of top museums. “Masterpieces of the Louvre,” for example, offers insights about the Venus de Milo, da Vinci's Mona Lisa, and a dozen other great works. Many tours—like those at the Kimball Art Museum in Texas and the “Leg It ’Round Lego” exhibit at Britain’s Bowes Museum—are available for free.
And when you find a piece of art you love, the app can even show you how it would look in your home. Simply tap the AR (augmented reality) button at the top of the screen to see the priceless painting hanging (virtually) on your wall.
