You’ve all played a running game where you swipe to change lanes by now, right? You know the kind: Temple Run, Subway Surfers, Minion Rush…well, Sega has had a peek at where this persistently popular genre goes next with Sonic Forces: Speed Battle.
It’s got the recognisable characters from the Sonic universe and the familiar avoid-the-stuff play, but every race in Speed Battle is against three other real players. Throw in Mario Kart-style weaponry and you’ve got a running game with a harder, much more competitive edge.
It makes every dodge or wipeout feel all the more important knowing that any slip up will hand your opponents the lead. The boosts and power-ups strewn across the tracks mean every race requires some pretty intense fingerwork, to not only dodge the scenery flying towards you, but the projectiles fired and traps laid by your opponents.
