In the list of videogame worlds we’d like to live in, Rolando is up there vying for top spot. From its four bouncy, vibrantly colourful settings to its jaunty soundtrack from DJ/producer Mr. Scruff, it’s a joy to simply spend time here.
Little wonder it was such a hit on its debut 10 (yes, 10) years ago. To commemorate that milestone, creator HandCircus has completely rebuilt the game; not only does it look better and run smoother than ever before, but its levels have been tweaked – and in some cases totally overhauled.
At heart, it’s the same feel-good platform-puzzle game that won us over when it first launched in late 2008. Back then, it was the perfect demonstration of how brilliantly intuitive touchscreen and tilt controls could be, making the most of iPhone’s unique capabilities.
Happily, it remains a joy to play, with smartly designed levels full of things to prod and poke at. You’ll spin wheels with your fingers, lift and lower platforms, detonate bombs and catapult the titular Rolando over wide ravines.
Your round heroes face a wide variety of challenges: sometimes you need to get just one to the exit, at others you have a whole gaggle of Rolando to guide there. A sleeping king needs to be nudged to safety, while a spiky commando can stick to surfaces.
All that tilting and tapping make Rolando: Royal Edition as much a tactile toy as it is a platformer; an anniversary celebration guaranteed to put you in the party mood.
