We finally have Disney+ in my country after waiting two and a half years. The content is amazing and far better for me than any other services I have but the apps are just terrible. Across the board there is no “Watch from beginning” option on titles that you’ve already started. Not so much a problem on mobile devices as you can just drag the progress bar back to the beginning but a huge pain on my LG TV as I have to manually click in 10 second increments either to the end or beginning to start over. Probably not the place to complain but on the TV app you can’t scroll quickly through the progress bar to skip to a time much further in or use the cursor functionality of the remote to click a point on the timeline. The Netflix app has this option and I don’t know how a service that’s been around for over two years hasn’t got this addressed. The status bar on the iPad stays as an overlay while watching which is also quite annoying.Overall not impressed with the apps but the content makes the struggle worthwhile
Oh the pain that these two missing features presents. Obviously, my preschoolers want to watch the same movie several hundred times. But there is no “play from beginning” button which means several minutes of my life is wasted manually rewinding on the LG tv app. Combined with irritable children who are still grasping the concept of delayed gratification, and we have a rather stressful experience and complaints. Tell me, if a 5 year old recognizes this as an issue amid her wails of frustration “but mom, Netflix has the Play from Beginning button!!!” then why on earth has Disney + not recognized this as an issue in their infinite wisdom? You’d expect Disney to know their audience best (read: impatient, whiney preschoolers, and the parents of said preschoolers), yet they have failed us miserably. Lastly, the autoplay feature has mysteriously stopped working. Leading to an interruption in my life every 7 minutes after an episode of their beloved Bluey ends. This is not conducive to a parent trying to work from home! Please fix the bugs! Otherwise we will simply be forced to switch back to Netflix for the convenience of less frustration and a more productive work day.
As a UI/UX designer I’ve got to say, the execution of this design is really “poor” you’ve skipped over the majority of important parts like downloading content. Have you got any idea how infuriating it is to try and download an episode? No? Great. That means you didn’t bother with user testing. Firstly, it’s not intuitive enough and secondly heaven help you if you’ve made the effort to patiently download 20+ episodes across the board and you’ve got to delete the expired ones, because sweet lord does that test a humans patience. No multiple select? Guys seriously, I’m not saying copy your competition, but maybe learn from their mistakes and their successes.. Netflix may be drying up for the most part, but at least their UI keeps me coming back… your UI is making me rethink how I’m spending my money. Everything is hidden and a happy surprise of you manage to find it. Think of the user for goodness sake. Make their lives easier and make it harder for them to close your app because of the pleasant experience they’re having when using it.
All their apps are terrible. The tablet and mobile apps are too sensitive. You barely touch the screen and it closes everything. The Xbox app doesn’t allow you to continue watching from the middle of an episode. It sits frozen and you have to restart each episode. None of the apps remember where you are with each other. The number of times I have downloaded an episode to watch offline that I have already seen. These apps are all connected to the internet when I download so they should be syncing. It even happens on the same device. I can watch a few episodes one night and the next day, the same device forgets where I am and starts playing an episode a few episodes back. When you open a series you are watching, it always opens up to the first season and first episode in the list. Why not take me to where I am?? The apps are both laggy and too quick somehow. Overall a terrible experience of all apps.Adding to this that it now doesn’t allow you to download any episodes on tablet. Just sits on download but never finishes. Can’t believe these issues haven’t been fixed yet!
I attempted to log into the app several times on two different Apple devices (iPhone 11 Pro and iPad) and experienced so much trouble. When I finally managed to log in, I selected something to watch and was logged out again. This app has many bugs that need to be fixed. The other frustrating aspect is the short amount of time one has between retrieving an OTP and entering it into the app. This is not taking into account any delays caused my poor internet connection. This app needs to be updated to address these issues. 5 June 2022: My sentiments about this app remain unchanged. The app was not ready to be launched on ANY platform. The latest update has made no difference. The developers have really disappointed users. The app provides great content but what good is that if the delivery is subpar?! 29 June 2022: This app requires a complete overhaul. It is very poor quality and the user experience is utterly ridiculous. From the login process, to the interface that logs you out everytime you out your screen down, to playback that buffers, to the downloads that don’t play correctly. Then when one need technical support, that is not even a possibility as the function malfunctions. Ever so often an update is released but it is not specified which bugs are being rectified nor is there a visible difference in the performance of the app. The consumer is not being given the product that they paid for in this case and this is rather disappointing from a reputable company such as Disney. I maintain that this app was not ready to be launched. Instead of focusing so much on marketing the launch of the product, more time and effort should’ve been dedicated toward ensuring the app is user-ready, especially if you don’t even offer a trial option. Disney needs to really provide consumers with significant updates or they stand to lose many of them.
The actual content and variety of movies and series in Disney Plus is great… but the app is ATROCIOUS, unorganized and not at all user friendly! The Netflix app is 1million times better. Disney Plus needs to take some tips from the Netflix app. Even when trying to download movies /series in Disney plus it doesn’t group the series episodes in folders and arrange them in the correct order. Everything is all mixed up and episodes don’t follow on correctly. When in the downloaded section of the app it will mix the different series up and then when you try watch the series in your downloads episode 15 will show after episode 20 and then episode 18 and it doesn’t show you what episode it is, it only gives you the episode name so it’s extremely difficult to watch a downloaded series in the correct order. It’s also REALLY difficult to download movies and series because when you press the arrow to download it opens up the movie or episode to watch instead of download. It’s a HUGE frustration. Some MASSIVE adjustments and improvements are needed for this app!!!
