"Opening the Newman’s app was like meeting Ken again – elegant, simple and shining with his wonderful art. The groupings make perfect and immediate sense, the page layout is instantly assimilated in a glance – this app now sets the ornithological standard and deserves a full 5-star rating."

– Dave Pepler, Presenter of Groen on DSTV

In a world characterised by speed and urgency, birding offers the antithesis – a chance to sit still, unwind and simply observe – whether in one’s own garden or in a remote area of the bush.

This Newman’s Birds app is the perfect companion for all birders, from the beginner to the keenest twitcher. It is based on the 2010 commemorative edition of Newman’s Birds of Southern Africa, one of the most popular birding guides in the region since its initial publication in 1983.

Try before you buy – there is a free lite version with full app functionality, limited to 60 species, so that you can see how it works before purchasing this app. Search for Newman's Birds of Southern Africa LITE.

This app includes a cloud-based life list that stores your sightings online. You need to log in to the life list while you have internet connectivity, but once logged in, you can add sightings when you don’t have an internet connection. When you next connect to the internet, the life list will sync, and your new entries should be added to your list. The life list will sync to all your devices that have the app installed and where you are logged in with the same details.

Best in class

The app is best in its class (vs Sasol and Roberts) for ease of use and general functionality. Pictures and descriptions are spot on. Bird calls are great (although the interface could use a clean up to suit the more general aesthetic of the app - would be great to still see the bird image and hear the call). Navigation is superb.

I think it would really benefit from enhancing the life list. In the first instance prevent duplicates in the master life list.

Similarly the ability to have multiple ‘holiday lists’ (with possible tick boxes - much like the back of the book) would be great for tracking sightings on the go - over and above the life list. In these instances the location and date data can be captured once and a list with a tick box would be easier than navigating to each individual bird for recording purposes (same can be said for the life list - especially for more experienced birders migrating to the app - adding birds individually is a chore).

There is great potential to create really rich data along date(season), location and sightings pattens with multiple editable lists - without cluttering the life list.

All in all, well worth the current price tag.

Newman's App

This App has managed to quickly eliminate the majority of non target species from the birders search, thus making it ideal for new birders and foreigners (who also get easy access to a list of endemic and near endemic species). More experienced birders will find it useful to quickly confirm a target bird and then get back to observing. A wonderful addition to any birders collection of ID references

While the app is useful, I’m disappointed that I can’t identify with a photograph and the some common names are missing, for example, “loerie”.
Also the actions within the app are not as responsive as I’d like. To get out of a search, even if you “clear all”, it doesn’t take you back a screen. There should be an option to go back to list. Not worth the R200+ I paid for it.
People should get experienced app users to try out their apps.
