Description

Signal is a messaging app with privacy at its core. It is free and easy to use, with strong end-to-end encryption that keeps your communication completely private.

• Send texts, voice messages, photos, videos, GIFs, and files for free. Signal uses your phone’s data connection, so you avoid SMS and MMS fees.

• Call your friends with crystal-clear encrypted voice and video calls. Group calls supported for up to 40 people.

• Stay connected with group chats up to 1,000 people. Control who can post and manage group members with admin permission settings.

• Share image, text, and video Stories that disappear after 24 hours. Privacy settings keep you in charge of exactly who can see each Story.

• Signal is built for your privacy. We know nothing about you or who you’re talking to. Our open source Signal Protocol means that we can’t read your messages or listen to your calls. Neither can anyone else. No back doors, no data collection, no compromises.

• Signal is independent and not for profit; a different kind of tech from a different kind of organization. As a 501c3 nonprofit we are supported by your donations, not by advertisers or investors.

What’s New

Version 7.8

• We added support for custom nicknames and notes for anyone you're chatting with on Signal, even if they aren't in your system contacts. Whether you're adding the missing letters in a lazy friend's profile name, or a reminder about where you met, notes and nicknames provide a convenient and secure way to jot down additional details about your Signal Connections — and they're end-to-end encrypted and protected by your Signal PIN so they can be securely restored if you lose your phone too.

Feature request

I love the new group features added recently, makes a huge difference. Chat bots on groups would be the number 1 feature I’m missing and secondly the ability to quickly create polls in a group. I am a somewhat experienced developer and do understand the efforts behind implementing such a feature as bots, but it could be a compelling feature especially with the ability to create custom bots and even self-host it.

Keep on building the best IM and maybe I will find some time again in my hands and contribute on github.

Excellent, but the last update crippled it

This is an excellent app. I wish everyone would use it.

However the v3 update kills performance. Now, opening a chat with a long history takes 20 seconds and sometimes during typing the keyboard just freezes only to start responding after a very very long time. Switching between multiple conversations, almost not possible due to the perfomance drop.
I guess archiving an old conversation would’ve solved this new performance issue, but since an incoming message from the same person unarchives it and does not start a new conversation, this is not an alternative. Get ready to delete your chat history to be able to use this update ;(
Being able to link to ipad is wonderful. Wish it was possible to transfer chat history to the linked device.

A disappointment

Signal started out well - a bit clunky compared with WhatsApp and Telegram, but getting the job done with improved security and less intrusiveness. Then came the “update” that downgraded the app: reduction of user ability to address any number of recipients at once to the same maximum of five simultaneous addresses imposed by WhatsApp. The update notes fail to mention this while trying to talk up the function enhancements it brought but it’s a huge irritation, especially since Telegram has been able to operate without the restraint. It would be less of an issue if Signal provided a broadcast function (as opposed to fully interactive groups) but it doesn’t. Might as well use Telegram and endure the ads, which are less of an irritation than the address limitations on Signal.
