TheTreeApp is a sophisticated tool for smart phones and tablets to identify indigenous and invasive, alien South African trees.
You can choose your location to reduce the Tree List from 1114 to the actual number that grow there naturally.
Follow the easy, step-by-step Tree Search process, and match characteristics of your tree to those on the app. Select the relevant tick-boxes and watch as the number in the Tree List reduce! Tree details are in artworks, photographs, maps and texts.

The powerful, rapid and highly intuitive search function provides the user with much more than just a keyword search and makes it possible to discover everything about South African trees.
Once loaded using WiFi, no internet is needed; but satellite coverage improves the experience.
It has an inbuilt education system; based on clicking InfoHotSpots, for explanations about anything that is not clear. Icons and texts cover virtually every aspect of the App's functions.
In addition the My Trees function allows you to add and list the names of your tree sightings. You can type in notes and record GPS locations.
You can select your primary and secondary language from Scientific, English or Afrikaans, but can search through the trees using any of the 11 South African languages.
A glossary gives access to botanical words from/used in other more complex publications.

Great, but lacking at the same time

Don't get me wrong, I love this App, specifically its layout, ease of use, rich information and superb illustrations, especially by Joan Van Gogh, whose work I am very familiar with (did you know, remarkably, she is a descendant of the impressionist Vincent Van Gogh?). The App is priced just right and certainly gives good value for money. My slight criticism though is that, as good as the illustrations are, they do not give a good overview of the entire tree and mostly do not include photographs. Also, although the focus of the App are our indigenous species, and despite the inclusion of many alien species, I have discovered a few at first use that are not. For example the English Oak (Quercus robur) established more than 200, possibly 300, years ago, so hardly an alien and ubiquitous in the Greater Cape Town. One can only hope that the database will expand with future updates and include an increasing variety of images.

Thanks for the feedback and glad you enjoy it! We are continually adding more data to the app and are in the process of adding hundreds of photographs which should be available in the next month or so. We have also identified about 60 trees which might be added to the list available in the app.

Much easier than going through a book! Definitely worth the price. A lot of work has gone into the app. It does help to be really standing at the tree though. (I just cannot find anything on oak trees - obviously not indigenous though. )
