One Night Stay at Sun Square Hotel Cape Town

When I called the Sun Square in Cape Town, I was informed it was a 3-4 Star Hotel. It is a pleasant enough hotel, if you’re not expecting 7 * treatment. To my disappointment, when I checked in and enquired about dinner, I was informed, the kitchen & room service closes at 9pm. The front desk clerk informed me, “it just closed 3 minutes ago.” As my voucher was already paid for, for DBB; I asked could they not rustle me up something, as I had not yet had dinner? So I was pleasantly introduced to the chef, who kindly prepared me a sashimi salad. It was most delicious. Perhaps because I was starving ... I wiped the plate.

There was not a very elaborate spread for breakfast. Not much of a variety of fresh fruit, or continental delights, but full English breakfast on offer.

All in all, the stay was not too bad. The hotel is clean, not too shabby. The staff, friendly and courteous.

A valuable tool for travelers.

When traveling I always consult Trip Advisor before going anywhere. Normally if the general opinion is good or excellent, the place will be as described. I have, however, experienced a restaurant in Amsterdam with a very low rating, which I found the food and service to be excellent. Similarly in Cape Town recently, at a hotel where the service had been criticized as awful, the owners had obviously taken the criticism very seriously as the service received was excellent.
What I find to be great about Trip Advisor is the honesty of contributors. They generally appear to say it as they find it.
I have had occasion to give a high and a low rating to the same establishment on different visits because I believe that the owners need to know when they have succeeded or failed.

Foxcroft

I had a really good dinner for four at Foxcroft in winter so made a mental note to return. Friends were reluctant citing bad experiences which I could not believe. So yesterday I convinced a business colleague to let me try make a lunch booking. So I called for a late chance in the morning - “mmmmmm maybe we can fit you inside” - “thank you very much see you at midday”. When I got there the restaurant was empty. I asked my charming hostess to try and make a plan to get me a table outside if there was any chance. We sat at the assigned table and ordered the Charcuterie platter for two to start. The platter was inedible - most fat I have ever seen on a plate! The ham was more fat than ham and two types of “bresaola” was 80% fat. We tried hard to eat half between us. I won’t even try and describe the rest of the meal. When we left an hour and a half later there were many tables unoccupied, many of them where we asked to be seated outside. Worst experience I have ever had at a restaurant anywhere! Don’t know now to post a pic of the charcuterie platter so you can see. Not recommended!!
