Playing the same golf course twice is now a thing of a past.
A Hole-In-One Golf Game
Golf courses. They take a lot of resources to build, occupy large areas and years after construction, they stand their ground, largely unchanged. Sure, some courses become iconic, but wouldn’t it be much more exciting if they were more dynamic and flexible, so that every game feels like a new challenge?
This kind of thinking was Jano Booysen’s inspiration to create Chippy Golf, a fast-paced golf game for iPhone and iPad. After observing a group of his golfer friends having fun on an improvised course with sticks while on a camping trip and seeing them tweak and adjust it to increase difficulty, he knew he was onto something. A few weeks later, he had developed a demo version in which a pixelated golfer attempted to score a hole-in-one on a variety of courses, no two of which ever looked alike.
Chippy Golf’s aesthetics take inspiration from retro console games, which Booysen played as a child, and this streamlined, minimalistic look fits the gameplay perfectly. Flinging objects to hit other objects further away has been a well-known game mechanic for many years. Yet through the addition of details like sound effects, including crowds cheering, and algorithmically generated levels, the game has a refreshing, sleek feel to it.
So sleek, in fact, that it’s hard to believe that Chippy Golf is Booysen’s first foray into game development. With a background in graphics and animation, he initially started building the game as a hobby project, but it has certainly become a lot more for him since.
“I enjoyed making Chippy Golf so much that I definitely want to make more games. There are plans in the pipeline. Something with aliens and hipsters,” he says. And we’re sure he has a bright future ahead of him. With a beautiful simplicity, Booysen manages to hit that elusive “one more round” sweet spot that so many games are attempting to find. And there are more levels and gameplay enhancements to come, so now might just be the right time to start practising your swing!
