The evolution of the human being is a remarkable process. About 2.4 million years ago good old Homo habilis got tired of faffing about like his ancestors and started evolving what would turn out to be the opposable thumb. Well, it took a good long while, but finally we can present a good use case for this digit: playing Beat Street.

You see, the entirety of this old school beat ‘em up style game can be played using just your trusty pollex. Running around the game world, beating up thugs, performing special moves and basically everything else is done with a few simple taps, swipes and drags across the screen.

This splash screen announces a boss battle. This little guy is tougher than he looks.

For example: running around just requires you to drag your thumb in the direction you want your character to move in. Punching and kicking is done with a tap and a dash or jump requires a horizontal or vertical swipe, respectively.

During your ongoing quest to punch every single bad guy right in the pixel, you will earn tokens and coins that allow you to beef up your favourite heroes. This will allow you to go back into earlier levels, but on a harder difficulty.

Nice touch: you can play the game in either landscape (shown) or portrait orientation.

Don’t let the simple controls fool you: even on the easiest setting, Beat Street is a demanding game. You can’t mash your way through this one, you will have to use precise positioning and time special attacks well to make sure you don’t get flanked and clonked in the noggin.

So thanks, Homo habilis. It took us a while, but your contribution to humankind is finally paying off.
