Numbers is a total solution to my spreadsheeting

I switched to using NUMBERS, PAGES and KEYNOTE from the 'obvious competition' and found them not only more intuitive and easier to use but they actually speeded up my productivity. The export function works perfectly for creating files in different formats. Absolutely brilliant, can't fault these apps at all. Being free apps the question is asked why would Mac users even consider using a paid-for alternative when these are head and shoulders above the rest. All that's required now is a Mac Database software like the one that came with AppleWorks in the old days (and became Claris).

Good Enough

Numbers is good. It's a native Mac App and is nicely designed. When you're stuck it's usually easy enough to find solutions online. It's not without foibles and oddnesses, but there's nothing in it I can't live with.

As a software engineer with an interest in end user programming I find Numbers a conservative addition to the market of spreadsheet software. To me this seems perhaps a missed opportunity for some radical departures and improvements from established approaches. However, it is also understandable Apple would stick to known approaches and use functions, types and UI that users have already accepted.

If you are highly fluent in Excel (I'm not), you will probably spend a while getting used to what is different. I don't think you'll find anything substantial you just can't do, but you might find your reflexes will need to retrain a little. However, I believe the available functions are very close to those of Excel.

Numbers Review

If I were being charitable I would have given 4 to 4.5 stars to Numbers 13.0
It has some great features, which once you get your head around that it is not an excel clone, are great. However, the downgrade is due to the fact that it has not really advanced since its original release years and years ago. I wont focus on the positives but some of my bugbears are:
1. The level of formulas is poor at this stage in its life - for example there are no matrix type functions which have been present in excel for a long time.
2. The formula bar with its large brackets are in a very light coloured grey and it can be very difficult to see in a lot of light conditions - what's wrong with plain black? The formulas can also get easily corrupted when inserting formulas within formulas.
3. Importing from CSV / TSV files - there is no way to set a default preference so every time you will get a space separated import instead of defaulting to say tab and you have to manually adjust.
4. The level of charts on offer is also very limited for this day and age - maybe it was ok 15 years ago but nothing has changed.

There are plenty of positives and on a good day this review would be a 4-4.5 but in the cold light of day, enhancements since its original release have been very few and very far between.
