This update improves the handling of network communication errors and network communication processing. [Update from the Development Team] On August 31st, the NERV Disaster Prevention App Development Team participated in the Miyagi Prefecture Comprehensive Disaster Prevention Drill held in Marumori, Miyagi Prefecture. On the day, we also exhibited our disaster response vehicles, and were able to welcome many visitors, including local residents. Despite the sweltering heat and high humidity, some people even travelled over an hour to come and see us! We'd like to express our gratitude to everyone who visited us.

We've fixed some issues where widgets may not have displayed correctly when using the home screen tint feature in iOS 18. Additionally, an issue where typhoon paths would not display correctly when a typhoon redevelops after having once dissipated has been rectified. We apologise for the inconvenience caused to our users who experienced widget issues following the previous update. Please ensure you stay cool, as the recent hot weather continues. Strict vigilance is necessary in order to protect yourself against heatstroke.

This update features minor changes to the handling of earthquake and tsunami information, based on specification changes provided by the Japan Meteorological Agency. Specifically, changes to the tsunami information data format enable the display of additional text values for tsunami wave height gauge forecasts and observations. The earthquake information specification was also updated to replace Japan's local coordinate system with the World Geodetic System for positioning. This change affects how estimated arrival times and seismic intensity values are calculated for earthquake early warnings. As a result of these changes, we've also renewed our forecasting services license to ensure our services remain compliant. [Recent News] Gehirn Inc., the company behind the NERV app, recently celebrated its 15th anniversary on July 6th. However, as earthquakes were frequently occurring near the Tokara Islands that day, and some residents had to evacuate as a result, we felt it wouldn't be appropriate to promote this milestone through our regular channels (such as social media) during this disaster. Our thoughts are with the people of Toshima Village as they work to return to normal as soon as possible.

Crisis Mapping has been added to the Map layer with version 6.0.0! - Fixed various widget issues - Fixed an issue where the shake detection notification settings were not reflected on the screen ◆ Information to Help Disaster Survivors Restore Their Daily Lives So far, we haven't delivered enough information "that can help disaster victims regain their lives". The Crisis Mapping layer was developed with the aim of visualising information on the situation in an area after a disaster, especially information on water supplies and bathing assistance, disaster waste collection points, and places to apply for disaster victim certificates, among other livelihood support information. Some of this information relates to facilities available year-round, while others need to be updated regularly. We can't collect and organise this vast amount of information on our own, but with the help of our supporters, we hope to create a system where everyone can support those affected by disasters. ◆ A Request to All Supporters Though Crisis Mapping has only just launched, most of the information you may find is still unfilled. A strong user network is essential for creating high-quality information. This update adds a feature that automatically re-registers the location information for your current and registered locations when the app is launched in order to rectify the issue. We also solemnly remember those who lost their lives. During the Noto Peninsula Earthquake, we weren't satisfied with the performance of our push notification delivery infrastructure, so we tripled the number of instances and quadrupled the memory allocation to each, ensuring notifications were sent out as quickly as possible. We also identified and rectified minor issues in the Strong Motion Monitor layer and the program responsible for determining the notification range of estimated seismic intensity. Despite the unprecedented demand, our systems handled over 900 million accesses, with data transfers exceeding 4TB, at an error rate of 0%. The Strong Motion Monitor layer received a peak access of over 23,000 requests per second. While reinforcing our infrastructure and handling traffic incurs a cost, these expenses are offset by the support of our Supporters' Club members. We sincerely appreciate your ongoing cooperation, which allows us to maintain and improve the system's reliability. Since last year, we have been participating as committee members of the Japan Meteorological Agency's "Study Group on the Provision of Information on Long-Lasting Tsunami." However, given the tsunami warnings issued on January 1st and April 3rd of this year, there is still more work to be done to improve the quality of the information. This update fixes a few minor bugs. ■ 2023 In Review This year, we experienced complex patterns of data processing, such as tsunamis caused by large volcanic eruptions overseas and a series of large overseas earthquakes, tsunamis caused by earthquakes near Torishima that continued without a known magnitude, and J-ALERTs in the early morning and at night. There were many other non-development tasks as well, such as holding lectures at study groups of the Cabinet Office and the Digital Agency, and participating as a committee member in study groups of the Japan Meteorological Agency and the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications. It was a year in which our role was no longer limited to just developing disaster prevention applications. This release will be the last update of the year. We want to thank you all for your support and for taking good care of the app over the past year. We will continue to update the app in the coming year to make it even more useful for everyone. This update improves support for iOS 17. Our Development Team has been hard at work to ensure there are no issues with the app in iOS 17. We've also been fine-tuning the strong-motion monitor and push notification systems, as well as making adjustments related to the River Levels layer. We recently conducted a survey on X (formerly Twitter) that showed 72.7% of users prefer to use the Dark theme, while 27.3% prefer the Light theme. If you've been using the app without knowing you can change the theme, contrast, text size and thickness, we recommend you check out [Appearance] in the [Menu] tab. It also appears that some users may be unaware that we launched the "Strong-Motion Monitor Layer" on September 1st. With this feature, you can see real-time tremors all over Japan. We've been working for years to strengthen our information delivery infrastructure and speed up our apps to deliver information as quickly as possible. We are very pleased to provide new information "every second" with this update. The information delivery infrastructure and applications we have implemented are just the beginning of this technology. ・ Added "Strong-Motion Monitor" layer to Early Access What is "Strong-Motion Monitor"? The Strong-Motion Monitor layer is a feature that displays real-time Seismic Intensity across Japan, based on the Seismic Observation Network operated by the National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience (NIED). When an earthquake occurs, you can observe the real-time propagation of the earthquake through the colour changes displayed by each station. When changes occur at several observation stations, the screen automatically zooms to the affected area, and highlights the stations based on a grid. When all of the grid squares are gone, the screen returns to show the whole country. When an Earthquake Early Warning (Forecast) is issued, the Strong-Motion Monitor layer automatically integrates and displays the information from the EEW, including the forecasted Seismic Intensity distribution, and propagation of the P and S waves alongside the Strong-Motion data. A guide will be displayed the first time you use the Strong-Motion Monitor layer, so please read it carefully before using the feature. The Strong-Motion Monitor layer has been experimentally developed since February 2023 based on the "Joint Research Implementation Plan for the Utilisation of Strong-Motion Monitor Data", which was established by four parties: the National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience (NIED), Gehirn Inc., TBS Television Inc., and TBS・JNN NEWS DIG LLC, on December 21st, 2022. Due to the real-time nature of Seismic Intensity data being updated every second, we aim to test the service's durability against sudden increases in access during earthquake events, and verify the service's stability with a limited number of users during this Early Access period. We plan to release the Strong-Motion Monitor Layer to all users from September 1st, 2023. Please note that this is a separate service from the "Strong-Motion Monitor" web service provided by NIED. Gehirn Inc. has a dedicated communications line installed at NIED for information processing and distribution for the NERV Disaster Prevention app in order to provide this service. "Early Access" is a paid benefit for NERV Disaster Prevention Supporters' Club members to use new features in advance. For more information, please refer to the enrollment guide in the app's "Menu" tab.

- Flood Forecasts for designated rivers have been added - Fixed a problem where water level observation points overlapping your current location could not be selected The JMA, MLIT and prefectural governments jointly issue designated river flood forecasts as a public service to keep residents informed on river conditions near them. The four levels of flood information associated with a forecast are Flood Alert (equivalent to Warning Level 2), Flood Warning (equiv. Level 3), High Risk of Flooding (equiv. Level 4) and Floods Occurring (equiv. Level 5). This update also adds push notifications for when a designated river flood forecast is issued. You can now also see the forecast water level in the height graph when you tap on a station. We still have more features coming for landslide and flood information in the future, so we greatly appreciate your support as we continue to work on them.

This update fixes a bug where the river layer may appear underneath certain map features. The release of "River Water Level Information" on June 2nd coincided with many rivers exceeding the emergency flood level shortly after release, and our systems sent numerous push notifications to users. We spent the day monitoring API errors and ensuring the reliability of the system. Even in Chiyoda-ku (where our office is located), the nearby Kanda River experienced an increase in water level due to heavy rain, so on the very first day of release, we personally received notifications from the app indicating that the flood levels had been exceeded. As users of the app ourselves, we were able to make use of the water level information. We managed to release the update just in time within a tight schedule and were fully dedicated to delivering information without issue. However, there were some areas where adjustments were insufficient, and this update addresses those issues. As we enter the rainy season, we hope you'll make use of our push notifications and the new river water level information layer to stay safe. We will continue to work on further enhancing the delivery of Disaster Prevention information and would be grateful for your ongoing support.

Added a new River Water Level feature In this update, we've added a new 'River' layer. With the River layer, you can check the water levels at the monitoring stations and risk management-type water level gauges, updated every 10 minutes. - Display Method You can access this by selecting the 'River' layer from the layer switching button on the 'Radar' tab. It overlays water level information on the flood damage layer of the risk distribution. - Supports Push Notifications We will promptly notify you via push notifications if the water level at a nearby monitoring station exceeds the flood risk level in your current or registered location. Monitoring stations with water levels above the warning level are also displayed on the home tab. - About Flood Risk Water Level The flood risk water level is a guide for issuing evacuation instructions. If the water level at a nearby monitoring station reaches the flood risk level, please ensure your safety by making your own judgment, without waiting for evacuation instructions from local government. To our supporter members We truly appreciate your consistent support. Acquiring river water level data is an extremely high-cost endeavor, which has increased our operating costs by nearly 3 million yen annually. The ability to purchase such data has been made possible thanks to our supporting members. Moreover, the acquired data cannot be utilized in its original form, requiring us to organize and process it for ease of use. This necessitated considerable time and effort in preparation for this release, and we faced numerous challenges along the way. With a forecast of heavy rain, our development team worked at a breakneck pace to finalize the implementation for release. Now that we've finally released this feature, we sincerely hope you will make good use of it in the coming rainy season, and regularly check the river conditions. In this update, we've improved support for J-Alert. - Added support for English J-Alert notifications - J-Alert notifications are now displayed on the home screen and timeline. Tap on the notification to view the warning area on the map - Fixed display issues - English translation fixes J-Alerts used to be provided only as notifications, but now information can be viewed from Home and Timeline, in addition to notifications. Following North Korea's missile launch on October 4th, the Government used the National Instantaneous Warning System (J-Alert) to send out information for the first time in five years (since 2017). The development team was initially surprised, wondering if there had been a system issue or a bug. However, after checking the data and watching the event unfold on TV, they realised it was not a mistake. Since then, missiles have been launched one after another, and the development team began preparing to enhance the app's J-Alert functionality by the end of the year. We want to thank you for your continued use of the app. This release will be the last update before the end of the year. See your location's current weather and temperature, weather warnings and advisories, sunrise and sunset times, and the day's min/max temperatures at a glance, without having to open the app!
