WristTopo: Maps for Watch
Hiking, Running & Biking GPS
Free · In-App Purchases · Designed for iPhone. Not verified for macOS.
New in 7.3: import from Strava. Pick a route you planned or an activity you recorded, and use it for navigation on Apple Watch.
Find your way with a glance at your wrist. Plan a route on your iPhone, then follow it on Apple Watch: spoken turn-by-turn directions over topographic maps. Record the outing while you are at it. The watch runs on its own, so the phone can stay home, and downloaded maps cover you where there is no signal.
FOR EVERY ACTIVITY
WristTopo is built for hiking, running, gravel and mountain biking, skiing, and paddling: 30 activity types across foot, bike, snow, and water. It adapts to however you move.
TURN-BY-TURN NAVIGATION
Stay on course with spoken guidance and turn alerts on your wrist. See the next turn and how far to it, and hear the direction called out. It works with routes you plan in WristTopo and with GPX files you import. Waypoints are called out too: mark a hut or a summit on the route, and as you get close you feel a tap and hear its name.
ROUTE PLANNER
Tap the map to drop points and the route snaps to real trails, with distance and total climb updating as you add them. Close it into a loop, extend it into an out-and-back, or reverse it in a tap. Five routing modes cover running, hiking, biking, mountain biking, and straight lines for when there is no path at all. When the route is ready, one tap starts navigation on the watch without saving it first.
RECORD YOUR WORKOUTS
Start a workout from your wrist and follow distance, pace, elevation, and heart rate. The screens are fully yours: choose which metrics appear, how they are grouped, and in what order, with a separate layout for every activity. Everything saves to Apple Health, and finished workouts can go straight to Strava. If you would rather record in Apple's Workout app, run it alongside WristTopo. Recording and navigation stay independent.
QUICK ROUTE ON YOUR WATCH
Set a point on the watch map and Quick Route builds a path to it from where you stand. Useful when you spot a viewpoint on the far ridge and would rather not dig the iPhone out of your pack.
SAVED PLACES
Mark the trailhead parking, a water source, a shelter, a campsite. Save them on the iPhone while you plan, or drop one from your wrist the moment you stand there. Places sync both ways, carry their own symbols on the map, and one tap routes you to any of them.
BACKTRACK TO YOUR START
One tap while recording turns the track you have already covered into a route home, with turn-by-turn guidance all the way to the start.
OFFLINE MAPS
Download summer, winter, or satellite maps straight to the watch. Take a whole region for general use, or grab just the area along a route in one tap. The maps show contour lines, shaded relief, and marked ski trails, and they pan and zoom smoothly on the watch.
IMPORT YOUR OWN ROUTES
Import a GPX file on the iPhone, waypoints and all, and it reaches the watch in seconds. Show several routes at once and read climbs and descents at a glance.
ICLOUD BACKUP
Routes, places, and downloaded map regions sync across your devices through iCloud, and they survive a reinstall or a new iPhone.
PRIVATE BY DESIGN
No account to create, no ads, and no tracking. Your routes and recordings stay on your device and sync only to your own iCloud.

This update brings some of your most requested improvements. Thanks for all your ideas and feedback!
• Weather with Your Workouts: Weather conditions, temperature, and humidity are now saved with your workouts. See them in route details and Apple Fitness.
• Heart Rate Zones: Running, cycling, and other endurance workouts get a new heart rate screen on Apple Watch, with your current zone and time spent in it. Add zones to any other workout.
• Reverse Your Route: Save a reversed copy of a route on iPhone, or choose Navigate in Reverse on Apple Watch to follow it back—no phone or connection needed.
• More Reliable Workout Recovery: Workout recovery is now more reliable after your watch runs out of battery or restarts.
• Live Vertical Speed: See how fast you’re climbing or descending right now. Add Vertical Speed to your watch screens to help pace your climbs.
• More Ways to Export: Export recordings as FIT files for other training apps. GPX exports now include heart rate when available.
• GPS Distance Option: If Apple’s mix of GPS and pedometer data gives inaccurate distance due to movement patterns or watch calibration, you can now choose GPS only.
• Bulk GPX Import: Import routes from several GPX files at once.
• More Reliable Sync: Routes and settings reach your Apple Watch more reliably.
• Always-On Map Updates: You can choose more frequent map updates while your wrist is down in iPhone Settings.

• Routes can carry waypoints now. Mark the spots that matter on the way: a water source, a hut, the junction you always miss. Add them while you plan, or later by tapping the map of a saved route. If a GPX file already has waypoints, they come in with the route. You can change each one's icon and color, and they show up on your watch too.
• On Apple Watch, waypoints are part of navigation now. The bubble under the map shows the next one and how far away it is, and as you get close you feel a tap and hear its name, the same way you do at a turn. If a route has fifty water sources on it, Waypoint Cues in Navigation settings lets you keep just the tap or turn them off. Your turn cues stay as they are.
• There's a new Up Ahead screen on the watch while you navigate. It lists the waypoints you haven't reached yet, with the distance, time and climb to each one. The finish is always the last row, so you can see how much is left. Tap a row for more detail.
• When you plan a route, tapping the map now opens a card instead of adding a point right away. You can see where the pin landed, then choose to extend the route to it, reroute a leg through it without moving your end point, or mark it as a waypoint. The points you shape a route with aren't announced during navigation anymore, so mark a spot as a waypoint if you want to hear about it. You can still undo anything.
• Places and GPX work both ways now. A GPX file with nothing but waypoints goes straight into Places, and you can export your Places as GPX to take them anywhere else.
New in 7.1.1:
• Turn directions now appear on the watch’s data screens too, so you don’t need to switch to the map. They disappear automatically after five seconds on screen.
• Tap the middle button on the watch map to return to the last data page you opened, without scrolling through the others.
• The watch map uses less power, especially while navigating or recording. That helps on long days out.
• Fixed offline map download progress getting stuck at zero on iPhone until you restarted the app.
• Other fixes and improvements.

• The Biggest Redesign Yet — The iPhone and Apple Watch apps are built around the map now. Lists are now cards you swipe to act on, and every route, place, and offline map opens full screen. You can even search for an area while picking one to download.
• Places — Save the spots worth remembering: where you parked, a water source, the hut you're heading for. Each one gets a symbol and a color, shows up as a pin on both maps, and you can route to it.
• Tap the Watch Map — Tap anywhere on the map to see what's there: how far, how much higher, what it's called. Route to it or save it without leaving the screen.
• Routes on the Map — The Map tab now draws your routes on iPhone, the way your Apple Watch always has, each in its own color. Show on Map covers both devices now, and the map settings let you hide them all at once.
New in 7.0.2:
• More paths on the map — bridle paths, plus the cycle paths that were missing.
• Further improvements to how elevation gain is calculated for your recordings.
• Starred routes now show a star on their start marker.
• Other fixes and improvements.
I've been working on this one for a long time, and a lot of it came straight from your feedback. I hope you like it.

6.8 23 Jun
• Smarter Map Search — search on iPhone is faster and more accurate, suggesting places as you type and finding far more of them, including local businesses and points of interest.
• Walk & Run Routes — a new route type for everyday walks and runs that favors the shortest, most direct paths, especially in town. Prefer Hike for marked trails and more scenic routes, including trail running.
• Compass Mode on iPhone — already on Apple Watch, the iPhone map can now rotate to match the direction you're facing too. Tap the location button to center on yourself, then tap again to switch it on.
• Elevation Accuracy — improvements to the elevation gain recording algorithm for more accurate results.
6.7 18 Jun

This update is almost all about the map — and it's the biggest one yet. Brand new data and a fully reworked outdoor style.
• Clearer in Cities — built-up areas are much easier to read now. Buildings, roads, and labels were retuned for a calmer, warmer look.
• Paths, Reworked — every trail and track redrawn from scratch. Dashed lines mean unpaved, solid lines mean paved, so you can read each path at a glance.
• MTB Trails — mountain bike trails are now their own layer on the map, colored by difficulty: green, blue, red, and black.
• More Alpine Detail — SAC-graded T4–T6 sections get a colored stripe so demanding terrain stands out, with more trail names and route numbers across the Alps.
• Smooth Upgrade — maps refresh automatically as you use them. No re-downloads needed.
• Bug Fixes — fixed issues with navigation and the elevation profile, plus other small improvements.
