The game has the potential to finally fill the void that has taken refuge in almost every Pokémon fan since the creation of the franchise: The ability to bring the fantasy to life with an advanced mobile game of this nature. The introduction of PVP and trading was late, but appreciated. The game still has some tweaking to get rid of the “gotta grind em all” feeling. The introduction of an Amie system like the console versions to make non-combat worthy Pokémon still worth something. It would be nice for mechanics to be implemented to make a Pokémon worth more than is IVs and CP count. Maybe not as far as a tamagotchi emulation, but something along those lines (maybe some advancements to the buddy system). Player to player interaction is still highly limited, but I guess it’s early days. Rural areas still struggle. I’m hoping Niantic will work with the researchers at Silph Road to make this problem a bit more open-sourced. The game has some very nuanced mechanics that most people don’t notice. With Pokémon biomes, nests, migrations and regional exclusives, it really does make the game special. Hopefully these mechanics will advance as time goes by. Some tweaking to the PvP mechanics and a feature that allows Pokémon to be more interactive are all that’s missing, so far. On some levels, it feels like a lot of love went into the game’s development. However, every now and again, there are glimpses of features that are rushed or unpolished. Overall, watching this game from its beta up until now has been very rewarding. At the moment it seems a little aimless in comparison to its achievable potential, but I can slowly see it starting to become the ultimate mobile experience for Pokémon fans on what can easily become a legacy game. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to support the experience. It’s not what it could be, but it’s still a ton of fun and it is gradually moving in the right direction.
