Sanasauna is a Finnish-language crossword and word game that also works offline: at the summer cottage, on a plane, on the train. Solve on your own, or play the same puzzle live with friends over Bluetooth or the same Wi-Fi network. Your friends need no internet, no account and no purchases.
TWO PUZZLE TYPES
• Krypto (codeword): every letter is replaced by a number and there are no clues. A few numbers are given; you work out the rest from the words. Type a letter for a number and it fills every square with that number at once.
• Picture crossword (kuvaristikko): the clues sit in the grid next to arrows, and some of them are pictures. The big picture hints at the main word. The clue bar shows the selected clue large.
• Three levels: Easy, Medium and Hard. Picture crosswords have 10 × 14, 12 × 17 or 15 × 21 squares, kryptos 9 × 9, 11 × 11 or 13 × 13.
PLAY WITH FRIENDS
• 2 to 8 players in one game.
• Race: everyone gets their own copy of the same puzzle. Words score points, the fastest solver earns a bonus, and the scores stay visible throughout.
• Co-op: everyone fills in the same grid together.
• Teams: split the players into teams.
• The host starts a game, and friends nearby see it on their phones with a four-letter code. Joining takes one tap.
• Games run over Bluetooth or the same Wi-Fi network. No internet needed.
• Friends play for free: joining needs no account and no purchases.
• Every player's phone keeps the results.
• Take turns: one phone goes round the table, and each player solves a word or a few of the same puzzle on their turn. Name the players and the game keeps score and finds the winner.

• Points for every word. An optional 5, 10 or 15 minute timer adds a time bonus.

• Two themes, warm Löyly and crisp Avanto, light and dark mode, high contrast and adjustable text size.
• Works on phones and tablets, in portrait and landscape.
• Pinch to zoom and pan the larger grids.

The word list is built from open Finnish data: Nykysuomen sanalista by the Institute for the Languages of Finland (CC BY 4.0), FinnWordNet (CC BY 3.0) and Wikidata (CC0). Most picture clues are Twemoji graphics (CC BY 4.0). Licences are listed in the app's settings.
