Microsoft’s OneNote is more than a digital notebook – it’s a one-stop catalogue of all your notes, thoughts, scribbles, flashes of inspiration, scattered journal entries and – if you’re so moved – doodled portraits of your pets.

It’ll do almost anything, is what we’re saying.

Here are just a few of the ways this one app will help maximise your productivity.

Note: Tent goes here.

Take notes of any kind. Jot notes in history class. Snap a picture of a recipe, a book title or your parking place. Record yourself humming a tune that you can flesh out in GarageBand later. OneNote handles all of those formats.

Lock down those notes. OneNote gives you the option of securing your notes with a password, Face ID or Touch ID, ensuring that you’re the only person who can access your exciting new idea for a podcast or superhero franchise.

Sync your notes anywhere. OneNote syncs to Microsoft’s OneDrive, so if inspiration strikes while you’re on the bus, that grand idea will be on your laptop when you get home.

Scribble notes with friends. Think of OneNote as a notebook that all your friends or teammates can access at once. Collaborative tools make it simple for everyone to contribute to a single grocery list, school project or party invitation at the same time.

It doesn’t get much easier than adding notes with Apple Pencil.

Take notes by hand. If you’re in possession of an iPad and Apple Pencil, scribble notes, equations, chemical formulas and story ideas in your own handwriting. If your penmanship is especially lovely (or even if it’s not), use this feature to send thoughtful handwritten notes to friends and family.

Shape up your shapes. You no longer have to stress about drawing perfect geometric shapes; OneNote’s Convert to Shapes feature can make perfectly proportioned circles out of oblong blobs.

And you get all this for the extremely reasonable price of nothing. Which is definitely something to make a note of.
