How to learn languages on Tandem:
1. Select the language(s) you want to learn in the app
2. Tell us about your language learning goals and your ideal Tandem partner
3. Search for native speakers of your target language in the community
4. Kick-off your language exchange experience by sending your first message
5. Share topics with the Tandem community so you can have meaningful conversations about what interests you
6. Keep up the conversation with your new Tandem “pen pal” and speak like a native in no time!
While many features are free, you can choose to subscribe to Tandem Pro to access all the features on the app. Your subscription will automatically renew unless auto-renew is turned off at least 24-hours before the end of the current payment period. Your iTunes account will be automatically charged at the same price for renewal within the 24-hour period prior to the end of the current payment period unless you change your subscription preferences in your Account Settings.

- Location information: Required to use the Nearby feature to see members near you, the Travel feature to show members around the world and to add an approximate location to your profile.
- Microphone: Required for sending audio messages, making audio and video calls, and joining Language Parties.
- Camera: Required for taking photos to upload to your profile or post in a Language Club, take and send a photo in a chat, video calling, and scanning QR codes.
- Notifications: Used to send you notifications about acceptance into the community, new messages, new followers and their posts, new references and marketing communication.
- Nearby devices: Bluetooth access is required to connect audio devices during a call or Language Party.
You can still use Tandem without granting optional permissions, except features where their nature requires the respective permission, like a video call requiring camera permission.

This app truly is absolutely incredible. I seriously cannot say enough good things about this app, and while I could focus on how much I love specific features; what really sets this platform apart is that as a whole; is it perfectly streamlines an already profound concept: Language Learning by Language Exchange. It really is a completely different experience like no other that has become an essential part of my life that I cannot live without. Once you are immersed into the Tandem community, with the accessibility of easily meeting & making friends across nearly anywhere and everywhere in the entire world; working together with the common goal of cooperatively teaching each other's desired/for already-understood, language; that said other has a desire or need to learn; as this app's name suggests; "in Tandem", or together; simultaneously. I feel it won't take much convincing that, this skill, has agreeably; widely useful & applicable applications; of which I personally believe provide new depth, meaning, and understanding about; who, what, where, when, why, and how language is the way it is; and further, how both, we as people, and them as languages, have evolved over time throughout history, and across geographies. This app...Tandem is a portal....into that dimension...

This is such a great concept for language learners on a budget. There’s no need for classes or a tutor when you can just talk to someone as eager to learn as you. I love how we can teach each other our native languages in such a casual way. I’d give this app 6/5 stars if I could!Update: I have had Tandem for a week and I already see noticeable improvements in my conversions Spanish! I especially love the voice text feature. It lets me practice my pronunciation without having to video chat, which can sometimes be difficult and awkward when you haven’t talked to someone long enough. There is one slight issue that I’m having with some conversations every now and then. Sometimes I’ll send a message or two, but they will only reach the blue outline circle and check to display that they were sent but not delivered. Usually they will eventually deliver after waiting a bit or sending a couple more. I wonder if there’s a fix for this, or if it’s just a problem with WiFi connection. I still love this app and appreciate the time the developers took to respond to my rating. It’s not exactly a substitute for my cancelled exchange trip, but it gets way closer than I had expected. This has made quarantine so much more enjoyable! Thanks devs!!

Enjoyable, but needs improvement

I just downloaded this app today. I am enjoying it, but the number of requests is overwhelming. There should definitely be a way to filter out requests more. I’ve filtered by age and requested only people of the same gender, but before I figured that out I got 50 requests in under an hour. I think I’ll enjoy the app in the long run, but it’s frustrating that there aren’t ways to limit the type of contact more, and that people can message you regardless of if they fit what you’re looking for (many messages from people who aren’t native or fluent in my target language, which is fine if I’m just there to teach English, but my goal is to learn AND teach with the same partner, so even though I’m sure they are lovely people, I would rather not be getting so many messages from people who don’t even fit what I’m looking for). It’s just a little overwhelming, the point was to develop meaningful language connections, so it is a little frustrating that it’s so difficult to do that between constantly filtering new messages and reading all the profiles to see who fits, etc. In general, though, it’s an awesome concept, and I’m excited to use it more in the future and can’t wait to see what kind of improvements they make over time, and I like that they do filter the people they let use it. I definitely got fewer creepy requests than I expected considering that most social apps have a lot of people with ulterior motives and most of the people contacting me are actually there to learn and speak about language.

I really want to leave more than three stars because this app is so fantastic in theory. The problem is that a lot of the time your messages are in accessible because you have to scroll up and then down and then up and then down and repeat about four or five times to actually get your messages to load. When I first downloaded the app I had gotten over 200 messages the first day and it made it really rough to talk to people and figure out who would be a good teacher and mentor and that I could help in the same way because with so many messages coming in and not being able to load more than the first 10 to 15 messages made it extremely difficult. Right now I have my free 30 day trial for pro and so far the pro options are really great. I would give this App five stars in a heartbeat if and only if we could get a little bit smoother interface and a better flow when trying to load Messages.This app has so much potential and you can really learn a lot there are many very helpful people I still highly recommend that you download this app and try to get to know people and talk with them about the languages you’re interested in because it’s still a very valuable app. I really haven’t had any issues with spammers or bots or Advertisements or anything like that which is great!
