Overcut finished reference videos back to source media, rebuild conforms, and export clean CMX3600 EDLs for trailers, TV spots, and finishing.
CutMatch is a focused macOS conform-assist tool for editors, assistant editors, finishing artists, trailer editors, and post-production teams who need to rebuild source-based conforms from finished reference videos.
It is built for cases where all you have is a flattened reference movie and a folder of possible source media. In trailer, promo, feature, and TV spot workflows, a reference may be assembled from a longplay, feature export, or other flattened QuickTime, with no source clip metadata and no source-referencing EDL. Rebuilding that edit manually can mean searching through source files shot by shot, identifying the correct take, and slipping each source clip until it lines up with the reference.
CutMatch helps reduce that manual overcutting process.
Import a reference video, supply a reference cut-list EDL to notch the reference into editorial events, choose a folder of source media, run the match, review the detected source candidates, adjust or override matches where needed, and export a conform-ready CMX3600 EDL.
If you do not already have a cut-list EDL for the reference video, CutDetect, also from Cutpoint Labs, can analyze the reference movie first and generate the CMX3600 EDL that CutMatch uses as its reference cut list.
CutMatch is especially useful for trailer and marketing conforms from a longplay or flattened reference where there is no usable source clip metadata, no source-referencing EDL, XML, or AAF, and the conform needs to be rebuilt visually against source media.
Key features:
Frame-based visual matching between a reference edit and source media
User-supplied reference cut-list EDL input
Reference video notching from editorial cut points
Source media folder analysis
Candidate source match review
Side-by-side reference and source preview
Frame stepping for detailed match inspection
Manual source match override
Source offset adjustment
Reusable analysis cache
Run-log export
Conform-ready CMX3600 EDL export
Local processing on your Mac
Sandboxed macOS App Store build
Native macOS media handling using Apple AVFoundation
Typical workflow:
Select a reference video.
Import the reference cut-list EDL.
Choose the source media folder.
Choose a cache folder.
Run the match.
Review the detected source candidates.
Adjust offsets or override matches where needed.
Export a CMX3600 EDL.
Import the EDL into your finishing app and compare it against the original reference video.
Media compatibility:
CutMatch uses Apple AVFoundation for media playback, frame analysis, and source matching. For best results, use AVFoundation-readable ProRes, H.264, or HEVC media in .mov or .mp4 containers.
For best results, use clean cuts and visually matching source files. Use constant-frame-rate, non-drop-frame media with matching frame rates across the reference video, reference EDL, and source media.
Mild reframes, repos, scaling, flips, or color differences may still produce usable matches in some cases, but speed changes, dissolves, fades, heavy reframing, missing source media, or mismatched frame rates can reduce match accuracy.
Only matched events are exported.
