Train working memory from N-1 to N-15, up to seven streams at once, with a plan built from your answers and 12 brain tests. Pro required after a guided first round. Dual N-Back is a working memory training app for adults who want a real mental workout on iPhone. Train the classic n-back task from N-1 to N-15, with up to seven simultaneous streams, plus 12 cognitive tests including Stroop, the Schulte table and the chimp test. PRO REQUIRED A subscription or a one-time lifetime purchase is required to use Dual N-Back after the welcome. The yearly plan includes a 7-day free trial for eligible accounts. The welcome and a practice round are free. If you were already using the free version on this device before version 3.8.26, nothing changes for you. HOW IT WORKS Two streams arrive at the same time: a position on a grid and a spoken letter. You answer when either one matches what appeared N turns earlier. You start at N-1. Reach at least 80% accuracy on every stream at your highest unlocked level and the next one opens. It is hard on purpose, and that is the point. A PLAN BUILT FROM YOUR ANSWERS Tell the app your goal, your daily time and your experience. You get a personal 7-day plan, a starting level, a session length and a reminder at the time you choose. WHAT THE RESEARCH SAYS The dual n-back task has been used in working memory research since 2008 (Jaeggi et al., PNAS). Researchers still debate how far the gains transfer beyond the task (Au et al., 2015; Melby-Lervåg & Hulme, 2013). What you can measure here is your own progress on the task, and it's on screen. The best n back app I have tried out of like 5. I haven’t been using long, about a week, and have only unlocked quad n back. It is feature rich and seems to be completely free as advertised. I would rate it 5 stars but have come across one issue and one missing feature so far holding it back. The triple n back mode that utilizes color, one of the colors is red and one is pink, among others like green, blue, purple, yellow. The red and pink are way too similar. I’m not sure how this made it in to be honest. The test is about memory, not discerning colors. Use white or orange or anything that isn’t so close. Also, it should allow mixing and matching variables. Let me play triple mode but with position, audio, and shape, instead of color. Also, having color as the third mode as it stands makes it so color blind people are at a disadvantage. I see no benefit to having the modes locked as they are currently. Love the app and looking forward to updates and improvements.

The color set was reworked: the pink that sat too close to red was replaced, and one of the six colors is now white (black on the light theme), as you suggested; the set was also checked against simulated color blindness. And a Custom mode lets you choose which variables to track, for example position, audio and shape without color; it is part of Pro. My earlier reply called this work in progress; it has shipped. After playing literally all the n-back games on the App Store this is truly the best one made. Will there ever be a Game Center/leaderboard integration? Would love to compare stats with my friends. Apart from the social aspect it would greatly enhance the game if there was a daily game tracker for streaks for accomplishing certain daily goals

After playing literally all the n-back games on the App Store this is truly the best one made. Will there ever be a Game Center/leaderboard integration? Would love to compare stats with my friends. Apart from the social aspect it would greatly enhance the game if there was a daily game tracker for streaks for accomplishing certain daily goals

Before this month your could train as much as you wanted, now it has a dumb pay wall if you want to play for more than 5 minutes. Before this was the best dual n back app, it was free and interface is great but I guess the developers weren't happy with being what people needed & decided to add a pay wall. They sold out & now I gotta find a new app if I want to play my full 10 minutes a day. Shame

A completely new welcome for new users: a starry sky that changes color with every question, a member card with your name, a 7-day commitment you sign with your finger, then your personal plan. The Pro page is clearer too: everything it unlocks, and the dates of the trial. If you install the app for the first time, you still need Pro after the welcome. If you already use the app on this device, your access and your progress stay the same.
