Description

With Brightness Slider you can adjust screen brightness from the menu
bar, just like the sound menu provided by Apple, and with improved
control over the dimming process.

Using a keyboard with no brightness keys? Tired of low brightness
levels which are still too bright? Brightness Slider gives you total
control over your screen's brightness settings, allowing in
particular for a really smooth transition between low light and total
darkness.

Features:
- Screen brightness level adjustment right from the menu bar
- Dimming control at low brightness levels
- Arrow key function with active Brightness Slider menu
- Custom hotkeys for lowering and raising brightness levels
- Start at login option available in the preferences

How Brightness Slider works:
Brightness Slider darkens your display by combining two separate
methods. Method A adjusts the real backlight intensity of your
display and method B creates a semi-transparent black veil above
everything else. Why the complexity? Well, when dimming a display,
the final jump down to no backlight at all is very large, especially
in a darkened room. To provide more control over the dimming process,
the top-half of the slider controls the backlight intensity from 1
down to 0.1 (method A). Then, the bottom-half controls the opacity of
the semi-transparent veil, whilst keeping the backlight at 0.1
(method B). When the slider is at zero, the backlight is turned off.
The result is that the final jump now has several intermediate steps,
which means the perceived brightness (the combined result of both
methods) is that much more adjustable.

One last thing:
There are displays where Brightness Slider cannot control backlight
intensity. However, it can still perceptually dim the screen by
controlling the opacity of the semi-transparent veil (which can be
created on any display).

Works great on vintage MacBook DosDude upgrade

I have a 2009 White MacBook running High Sierra thanks to the patch utility. Everything works almost perfectly except that the brightness is a bit finicky. I encountered this after the upgrade to Sierra and solved using another utility. I upgraded to High Sierra and it appeared to fix the issue… until the latest update. Found this utility and it is really handy — I can assign keyboard shortcuts (unused F5 and F6) to adjust the brightness. Also, it remembers my last setting. So very glad to have found this utility.

Not consistent across all monitors

The first fifty percent of the slider dims the apple display backlight (having no effect on external displays). Then, the lower fifty percent apply a “veil” of gray (by manipulating the color output). This works on all monitors. However , the native apple display birghtness has already been turned all the way down, then further. So on the lower half, the apple screen is darker than the other external monitors. And when turned all the way up, the paple display is exceedingly bright compared to the others.

There should be the option to control each kind of dimming separately. With all the different types of monitors and setups, giving users more control to adapt to their situation is most appropriate. Kudos for trying to make a simple interface but it needs a little more thought on the settings configuration.

Works great on my external LG

I have an M1 MacBook Pro connected to an external LG monitor (that I use with a seperate fullsize Magic Keyboard and trackpad). I use the Macbook as a 2nd monitor on my left and the LG as a big main monitor. I just wanted to be able to turn the brighntess down at night without having to go into my monitor UI settings which is complicated. but this app works great!

I can just use the slider on the mac toolbar to adjust the brightness. And it only affects the external monitor. I can still control my MacBook brightness with its built in touch bar, or control center. this is exactly what I needed and I cant believe its free?? the hotkey programming does not work for me tho, but im still happy I found this app.
