Wouldn’t recommend, but I see the potential.

First, I’d like to say that I’m ecstatic that someone’s trying to make a proper animation app, I feel that it’s an untapped idea that no app has really done exceptional in. It has lots of potential.

Now for the review, I’ll start with the most important part, which is that the brush engine is unoptimized, clunky, and not smooth. I’m using a 2018 iPad Pro, 1080p resolution, and it’s still jittery and lagging. Turning on smoothing will only do that annoying outdated line jumping thing after you’ve finished your stroke. As long as all of this remains, I can’t bring myself to use this app.

There’s also the already often brought up “no audio option that lets you play audio and sync it with the animation” complaint. The developers have stated this is being worked on so I won’t fault it for that, but I hope that comes soon! And as a side note, a massive plus is that the developers seem to be very communicative with the consumers. The UI takes time to figure out but it’s rather intuitive when you do, and I ended up taking a liking to it.

That’s my review. Again, I want to stress that I really want this app to be improved, no app has done animation perfectly on the iPad yet and I really hope this can be the first.

Fantastic potential!!

I downloaded this a few days ago and started trying it out, and all I can say is that I’m excited for the potential this app holds. The minimalistic interface is perfect for the iPad and very reminiscent of Procreate.

Some of the navigation isn't entirely intuitive. Personally, I had troubles trying to duplicate frames, among a few other things. For the most part, it's fairly self explanatory.

I'm not a fan of the subscription model when it comes to pricing, so I'm glad there's an option to buy it outright. As an app, I can see where the $50 price point can be an issue. However, comparing that to other feature-rich animation software such as CSP or Animate CC, I really can't complain.

The smoothing on the brushes could be a bit better, but keeping it between 1 -6% yields excellent results. I'd like to see softer brush edges and imported audio the most right now. The pop-up buttons feel a little off to me and I think an alternative menu option would be a good option, or maybe make it togglable toolbar.

Ultimately, this app is worth supporting and I am impressed with how non-invasive the interface is. I feel like this could be a game changer for industry professionals looking for something on the go. I look forward to what the developers have in store!! Thanks for a great product!!

Thank you very much! We will work on audio layer later this year. If you are still confused with how to use some tools, feel free to go to callipeg.com/learn to watch the tutorials and read the documentation.

Nerd God ,

It’s fine, but I’m not sure I can recommend it yet over Rough Animator

I have a few immediate wishlist items before I could recommend this over Rough Animator (which I still find more functional even if the UI isn’t as pretty).

1) I want to be able to create cycles. When I create a looping sub animation (leg walk, eye blink, etc), it’s super helpful that I can set the last X frames to loop. I can’t in this app and it bugs me.

2) Why can’t I set frame length by default? I can stretch the drawing, sure, but it always defaults to on ones and I have to manually stretch it after.

3) One shortcut I love in rough animator is that I can set the volume buttons on my iPad to be back and next frames. This makes it a lot faster for me to just draw. Particularly when I’m doing roughs, it’s nice having that quick hardware button.

4) This isn’t something other iPad animation apps do, but the ability to parent layers would be a neat one-up. That way if I have a layer for a head and a layer for eyes, I can keep their positions relative (i.e. I move the head and the eyes follow). It’s doesn’t need to be a whole bones system (though I’d love that) just something basic.
