FDUtility
Frozen-Frame Detection for Pro
Only for Mac
$29.99
Mac
Scan 8 hours of footage in 32 seconds. Visual progress bars, 1000+ file batches, FCPXML export. The only native macOS freeze-frame detector.
FDUtility detects frozen frames in video files at 1,600× realtime. Built for NLE engineers who need to verify that raw footage is freeze-free before editorial, color grading, or delivery.
WHAT IT DOES
Drop your camera files in. FDUtility scans every frame and reports exactly where freezes occur — start time, end time, duration. Export the results as FCPXML timelines and open them directly in Final Cut Pro or DaVinci Resolve.
WHY IT'S FAST
FDUtility uses a two-phase detection algorithm built on AVFoundation and Apple's Accelerate framework:
Phase 1 — Timestamp Gap Scan: Reads compressed sample buffers without decoding video. For VFR camera recordings (the dominant format), this alone produces the complete result at near-instant speed.
Phase 2 — Pixel Comparison: For CFR content, decodes to NV12 and uses vDSP-accelerated Mean Absolute Difference to identify frozen regions.
Result: A 54-minute VFR file processes in ~2 seconds. An 8-hour batch of 20 files completes in 32 seconds.
EXPORT TO YOUR NLE
Generate FCPXML timelines in three modes:
- Gaps: Frozen segments become gaps; clean footage becomes clips
- Frozen Clips: Both frozen and clean segments appear as clips for review
- Non-Freezes Only: Frozen segments removed entirely
Export for Final Cut Pro (FCPXML v1.10) and DaVinci Resolve (FCPXML v1.8) simultaneously. All timing values are frame-aligned to avoid edit-boundary warnings.
BATCH PROCESSING — BUILT FOR SCALE
- Add individual files or entire folders (recursive scan with live import progress)
- Group by filename prefix, date created, or folder structure
- Visual progress bars per file with freeze counts updating live
- Smooth, fluid scrolling even while processing 1,000+ files simultaneously
- Cancel individual files or the entire batch at any time
CONFIGURABLE DETECTION
- Noise Level: -80 to 0 dB (default -60 dB)
- Minimum Duration: 0.1 to 5.0 seconds (default 1.0s)
NO DEPENDENCIES. NO SUBSCRIPTIONS.
FDUtility is 100% Apple-native. No FFmpeg. No Homebrew. No Python. No cloud. No account. Your footage never leaves your machine.
REQUIREMENTS
- macOS 13.0 (Ventura) or later
- Apple Silicon or Intel Mac
Ratings & Reviews
- This app hasn’t received enough ratings or reviews to display an overview.
Fixes an issue where FCPXML "non-frozen only" exports could trim portions
of valid motion content. Drag-and-drop import (added in v1.1) now correctly
preserves full clip duration for short clips and timelapse footage.
