Does one thing really well – helps me focus
Mike Hallman
What's the only way to eat an elephant? One bite at a time. That's the beauty of this app, it helps me to break down my workload into manageable bites. I begin each day by reviewing my ongoing projects and what needs to be done that day, and often (most) times it's an overwhelming list. Anxiety builds throughout the day as I race to get everything done, which, combined with my ADHD (thank God for Vyvanse), increases the inefficiency of how I work, which in turn increases the workload by adding new work on top of work that should have been finished already. That's where Focus comes in, particularly with one of my favorite features, its integration with OmniFocus, my project planner of choice. Once I review and plan my day with OmniFocus, I open up Focus, and drag any tasks from Omni directly into Focus. For me, I find that 45-50 minutes is a good work period before a five minute break, and so when it's time to get to work, I simply begin the first task I want to work on, start the timer, and don't worry about anything else for 50 minutes. The great thing is, if in my ADHD mind I am tempted to get distracted by some new shiny thing – ooh, I want to learn how to do this on the internet! – I can convince myself that I'll soon have five minutes to do whatever I want, and later on a longer break of 20 minutes. This knowledge helps to eliminate the sense of urgency that ADHD produces to focus on that new shiny thing. Of course, one doesn't need to have ADHD to be easily distracted or to experience the anxiety that distraction's unproductiveness induces, especially in this digital age of distractions everywhere. For anyone who needs help focusing on that one bite at a time, this app is for you.
Wish it offered more for the price

This app is visually appealing, has extensive past details, & I do like the way it is set-up. However, like many others have pointed out, it has a STEEP price point for an app of this sort. It is already a little dissapointing that it is a subscription service instead of a one-time payment, but a one-time payment option should at least be offered -- the $40/year pricepoint they offer I believe is more than enough to be offered as a one-time payment with future updates included. Also, after trying multiple other free & paid-for pomodoro timer apps, I was suprised at the limited customization options offered for the most expensive of these apps. I wish it offered more sound options, when those sound notifications would be played (when a session is completed, when a break is completed, different sounds for each, etc.), the volume of those sounds, the ability to save multiple timers of different durations (some durations do not work for all tasks), & color options (not just system accent color). Being able to have folders with sub tasks under them would do wonders for organization too, & contribute to productivity. I understand that this app was made to be 'simple' in order for its users to primarily focus on their task instead of spending time tinkering with settings, but that sort of went out the window with the high price point attatched. I am critiquing this app because I truly like the base of it & hope that the developers could help it match its price point (or just bring the cost down).
Developer Response
Hi, and thanks a lot for taking the time to write this detailed review! We really appreciate your feedback an I noted all your feature requests for future development. You can also always get in touch with us via support@meaningful-things.com --> this works even quicker and I might be able to provide you with a tip or some guidance. For instance, did you know that you already can set custom timer durations for a task? Navigate to the task details and set the timer length that is appropriate for this specific task. If you don't set a custom timer duration, the default timer duration will be applied. We'll continue to improve Focus for the years to come and aim to offer you an app that elegantly and effectively supports your productivity.Best wishes,Kerstin
Better alternative to Be Focused Pro
Scholarly214
I used to use Be Focused Pro, but got frustrated that I kept losing my data when I wanted to look back at the reports to see my progress. Using Focus was a lot better because I can visually see how my productivity varies each week/month and how much time I put into each task. One time the Focus iOS app wasn't syncing correctly with the Mac app but I was able to receive help after emailing the support team. I am very satisfied that I still have my session progress saved. This app informed me about my productivity in my fall semester of college and I am looking forward to continue using it to finish my senior year (especially with Student Teaching tasks!). I also really love the menu bar item because it reminds me to get work on the present task. The dark mode and accent colors are a nice and necessary additions, as someone who works on my computer at night. Overall I would recommend this app to anyone who wants to keep track of their productivity with the Pomodoro method or set up their own work and break session length. Keep up the good work!
Really makes you aware of how you spend time

I transferred over from using Tomito ( great free version of this app) and while I enjoyed using it, I wanted to be able to extend my focus sessions without having to do some mental math and use other tracking devices to know where my time was going. I also like that this app allows you to see what task was being focused on and how many breaks you took. It even lets you budget how much time you want to spend on a task and will tell you through percentage if you met that budget or not. Overall this app is great for someone who worries about not studying enough or studying too hard. I plan on buying the subscription for this app!
