Underway is marvelous. It is the navigation app that I use most consistently on the train, and for good reason. It has exactly the information I need and nothing more, and it executes it perfectly. I know how to read a map. I don’t need colorful directions and an inventive new route that combines ferries, buses, and a dollar van. I want to know when I need to leave my apartment and if it’s worth it to wait for an express train. Underway gets me the information I want and it does it without drama. It also has lots of very thoughtful touches. It works very well offline, and I like that I can send a train tracking link to people I’m meeting so that they can track me live. It’s like flight tracking but for the subway. For all its utility and minimalism, Underway also betrays the meticulousness of its creators. Changes to the subway map are added right away — the walking connection between Times Square and Bryant Park seemed to appear within hours after it opened. Everything works how I need it to, when I need it to. EDIT: The service changes are better than just about any other app now. [Previously: The only thing that might need some more nuanced adjustment is the service change interface, which shows absolutely everything affecting a train at once and can be a touch overwhelming. Other apps do service changes, though.] Nothing does what Underway does as well as Underway does it. I haven’t even written an app review in years. I just feel I have a duty to point out the rare thing in our world that is not a disgusting disappointment. This is among them. Bravo!

Thank you so much for the kind words with incredible detail! It's nice that you really get what we're trying to do. We hear you that the service change interface is overwhelming, and we want to hear more please: support@underway.nyc or @underwaynyc on Twitter
My go-to NYC subway app
Yankees368
Underway NYC is a relatively simple but perfectly capable app and is my go-to for arrival time and train service information. It shows the trains actually serving stations at that moment in time, accounting for re-routings and service changes very well. I love being able to click on a specific train and see how long until it reaches stations further down the line as it enables me to make informed decisions on connections. It doesn’t provide routing information but if you have a general sense of direction for the subway system this should be all you need to get from A to B. Highly recommended.
love it - please add favorites
MStyleFTW
The app is perfect, except it would be great to have a fifth icon ("shortcuts" or “favorites”) which would open a layer screen where you can get to all your frequently used stations with a single click, instead of having to scroll around the map.Updated to respond to the developer: For those of us who understand how to use Siri Shortcuts but prefer not to use them (for various reasons) it would be great to have the ability to access our frequently used stations with two taps inside the app (Favorites -> station name).
Developer Response
Hi MStyleFTW, just following up on your request -- we've added Favorites, which can be accessed using the new heart icon, and is also viewable outside the app as a widget. We'd love to hear what you think at feedback@underway.nyc. Thanks for your review!
Love this app

This app is fantastic. You can open it and see what you need to see in less than 10 seconds. It’s awesome when a local train pulls up and you quickly wanna see how long until the express comes. Every other app has you clicking and loading and the train leaves before you find out the express isn’t coming for 10 minutes. Shoulda took that local. My only complaint is that the pro version is so expensive, I want to support the developer but $6 a month is a lot.
Developer Response
Thanks so much for the kind words! Yes, this is exactly how I use my app! Yeah Pro is about 2 subway swipes a month, or "there and back" on the subway one day out of ~30 days for the month.
