This appears to be the only font editor in the Mac App Store. There is a non App Store version of this app on the web that seems to be popular. It did everything I needed to do, but I was fumbling all the way through using it - used command-z a lot. There is nothing to tell you what the tools are. Some are obvious but most are just symbols that mean nothing to the average user. Some tools tips when hovering over them would be great. Also, there is no help file, or manual. There is a manual/tutorial on the website, but it is severely lacking in details. It doesn’t tell what all the tool icons are either. There are even a few videos, but they have no sound so you are just basically watching someone move the cursor around and don’t know when/if he’s clicking the mouse or pressing a key or anything. I’m sure the developer knows exactly what all the tools are and how to use them, but how about helping out users that are new to editing fonts. It’s a great app, and I was hesitent to pay $15 for it because even the description in the app store is almost nonexistent. I basically took a chance that it wasn’t complete garbage since it’s the only font editor in the app store. Now that I’ve played with it, I would have paid $50 or $60 for it. But it would sure be nice to know how to use it. Would easily be a 5 star app if it was a LOT more user friendly.

The REAL problem with this app is that there are not reliable instructions for using. Even ChatGPT is totally confused by this product. Affinity and/or Inkscape SVGs don’t import, no matter how many different settings you use for an SVG export. The tutorials don’t show the same tools as the UI after download. Even the instruction tutorials on the Birdfont site are piecemeal. A comprehensive guide might remedy these problems, but there’s no way to find out if this is a decent program without trying to stumble through and maybe figure it out.

Seems to do what I need it to do. Only wish there were a way to customize the theme colors. Some of the UI is a little hard to see like the “X” to close tabs, but otherwise very nice software

The app description says it can be used to create color fonts. I looked at the (meager) tutorials on the website, and imported a font into the SVG tab, but I was unable to locate any tools for color. I looked at the list of tool icons and found an icon for a tool that is supposed to "Set this color to the foreground color of the font (set by the user)", but nothing I do makes that button actually appear inside the app. This tool is great for black & white fonts. For color, I found it unusable. Either there is something wrong with the app, or it needs much better documentation.
