Musicality Training
A Snack-Sized Daily Exercise

Lower one note and a happy chord turns sad. Two albums teach all thirteen of those distances, and every note lights up as it sounds.
Roughly one in six adults believe they are tone deaf. Measured, the real number is closer to one in sixty-five. Musicality is built for the gap between those numbers: for everyone who quietly decided music was not for them, based on nothing.
You are not tone deaf. You are untrained. There is a difference, and you can hear it for yourself in three minutes a day.
What an interval is
An interval is the distance between two notes. The difference between a happy chord and a sad one is one semitone. There are thirteen of them, from the prime to the octave, and they are what Musicality teaches.
You answer by playing
Musicality plays a note and you play it back by ear, scored on pitch and timing, beat by beat. You are never asked to name what you heard. You need no instrument of your own. If you have a piano or a guitar, turn on the microphone and answer on that instead.
Play along with the record
Both albums play inside the app with the melody drawn as it sounds: on the page, on a piano keyboard, or on a guitar neck. Turn on the microphone and your own pitch appears beside the melody, so you can see where you landed. Training tracks play from half speed to one and a half.
Two albums
Basic Training and Sticky Tunes: twenty-six tracks composed for this app by Ruud Vleij. Every interval gets a Training that teaches the distance and a Tune that makes it stick. A tune never leaps further than the interval it teaches, so remembering the tune means remembering the interval. The tracks play like any album, lock screen and all: press play and simply listen, no instrument needed.
It starts before the first lesson
A four-chapter introduction builds music in front of you. A single pulse becomes time. Pulses fuse into frequency. Frequency becomes color and tone. Tones become music. No notation, no instrument, no experience needed.
Then, three minutes a day
Three minutes, every day. Your range grows only when your ear has earned it.
The thirteen intervals
The Prime you meet in the introduction; twelve more unlock as your ear proves itself, Minor Second to Octave.
Real music for every interval: a Training to play along with, a Tune to remember it by.
Thirteen rings, one per interval. They fill as you practice.
Every interval's story: its waves, its ratio, the songs it lives in.
Made by two people
The app is by Jamal Vleij: design, code, words. The music is by his father, Ruud Vleij. Begun in the Netherlands in 2013, continued in Porto, Portugal, and still being made.
The introduction is free, and three minutes of training a day. Pro removes the clock and opens all thirteen intervals.
